SEDONA, Ariz. (AP) — Deputies in Yavapai County says someone broke into a Sedona home and stole thousands of silver coins, bars of silver, gold coins and $80,000 in cash.

A sheriff's statement says the break-in was discovered on Dec. 9 when a woman arrived home and found glass in her back door broken out.

A sheriff's statement says the breaking was not initially made public because detectives were pursuing leads.

Among the items stolen were 7,000 one-ounce 2011 American Silver Eagles Coins, 15 South African Krugerands, 20 ten-pound bars of silver, 20 five-pound bars of silver, 30 American Gold Eagles with Canadian Maple Leaves and $80,000 cash. The exact value hasn't been determined.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's office.

  • This is sure to engender a lot of remarks, my first thought is what were they doing with that in the house? The second is, how did the thieves find out about it? Heritage catalogs in the mail? Remarks to a "friend" who repeated it in front of the wrong people?

Not much other choice in storing that many silver eagles. Best to have a large safe that takes some time to get into and a satellite communication alarm system that is constantly being monitored by a provider.

Keeping it from the banksters...yes indeed! Personally I'd never put my stash in a bank or safety deposit box. These poor folks were obviously targeted, and it's a horrific loss. But as Perry said, not much other choice than to keep it around. People just need to do a better job of keeping their mouths shut about their treasures, as well as having a much better security system. By the way, all that metal would easily fit inside one of those miniature fridges we all had in college; it's a relatively small volume of metal.

It would have been much easier for everyone involved if they would just have kept the $$$ in the MF Global account. Then the banksters could have stolen it without having to do any heavy lifting.

UPDATE: Majority expected to be recovered. As we already guessed, it was someone who knew the victim (had former business dealings with them). The article says this was a rural area which explains a bit to me how they moved that much without being noticed by neighbors.

Maybe the thief image worked for MF global . We will know soon enough if he gets billed for handling charges and a fuel surcharge for the miles they drove to the allocated storage facilities ( holes dug in the desert)

Silver is down a lot lately he may even get a margin call .

Care to elaborate? I'm guessing the government can seal them and search them. Didn't this happen during the last government gold confiscation?

Absolutely. The other thing that I have been reading about is that states are getting very aggressive with declaring boxes abandoned even without good reason to do so. Be careful.

So, if the metal is kept in a bank SDB, it's safe from EVERYONE except the Government and the bank itself? (and, possibly, VERY sophisticated and lucky robbers?)

and if it's in my home safe, it's not safe from Anyone who takes me by surprise and/or holds a gun on a family member, and/or stakes me out and hits when I'm not home?

    Wonder which is "safer"? image

I've got a stupid decoy safe at home filled with expensive looking junk and a little cash, and the good stuff is in a guarded and alarmed vault worth more than my house.

Decoy safes are a good idea if you can keep the real one hidden. As far as SDB's go I trust the government less than I trust a common thief.
