He finds a lot of semi precious stone chips that are worth nothing in resale and quotes I can get $30 each for them which is retail. That's how they come up with $300 a day.
Once he mines a length of sidewalk, it may take a decade or more before it's worthwhile to remine that length of sidewalk so he will eventually run out of sidewalks to mine since the size of the gold district is limited. Or am I overthinking this?

A clever story based on what you hear about Jewelery districts in India.
My grandfather was a goldsmith and tore up the linoleum floor of his shop after many decades to extract the gold imbedded.
Their was hardly anything there.
But... if you are unemployed and living in your parents house, why not go for it? American enterprise at least.
