Assuming it's all the same price and same net amount of silver (I haven't calculated the silver quantity of $75 in 90%), I would get the 1 oz. maples. The 1 oz. coins tend to have higher premiums which you can recapture when you sell. Same is true for the engelhards, but there's more of a premium built into the Maples, IMO.

I'd go with the Maples. At least they are worth $250 in fiat.imageimage

90% without a doubt in my mind.

Unfortunately, all .999 silver no matter what the brand/size/collectibility of it is just silver to the majority of people. Of course we know there are certain exceptions, i.e., a nicely stamped 7 oz Engelhard, but for the most part to most people (from my experineces and from listening to what people say here) it's just .999. Therefore, that kind of limits the liquidity of it imho.

From my experiences, buying or selling 90%, there's something about non-cull 90% that makes, or allows people to be more willing to accept it's not just silver. Maybe because ultimately there is numismatic value to it also.

So for me, it's 90%...and it killed me to sell the 2.5 bags I had of it this past Spring/Summer which took me a very long time to accumulate, but I had a different perspective of what I wanted to do with the funds at the time than I do now.
In hindsight, I look at it as probably the biggest bullion mistake I've made by selling it.
I would so much rather have all of that, and continued to add to it, than the "premium" .999 silver I feel trapped with now.

live and learn certainly applies regarding that.

Man, I don't have a 50oz bar, but if it's the same price I'd coin flip on the:

Maples - can sell or gift singles if/as needed.

$75 face 90% - if we're saying I can get those in AU WLHs and/or SLQs I'd absolutely take those. If we're talking junk and I couldn't get cherry frankies as 'junk' at least then I'd say the maples.

50 oz Engelhard - because I don't have one of those yet.
  • 1oz .999 rounds would be my first choice, but 90% is a very close second. While the premiums on the larger bars are nicer you have to ask yourself just how easy will it be to sell a 100oz bar if silver actually hit $100oz. Granted that's quite a high price and hopefully one we don't see for decades, but the point is that the smaller the size the easier it is to sell or trade. Ultimately I buy whatever is the cheapest and typically that's 90% at melt for a bit below melt. I'll step up to the plate and spend an extra buck or so for ASE's, but otherwise I want as much silver as I can for my money without having to buy large bars.

I'd personally go with the Maples.

Why? Because I think that they will always be more liquid.

My 2nd choice would be 90% because of my personal experience with it as real money when I was a kid.

    51 one ounce bars? LOL...tempting.

But I'd still choose the Maples, no questions asked, for the following reasons: divisibility, quality (market recognition = resale value and high premium), etc.

Another vote for the 1 oz Maples although you can't really go wrong with any of the choices presented.

    nothing against Eagles,
I kept them off due to the higher premiums if they were the same price I think they would be most peoples #1
If it makes you feel better, I'll add 47 eagles to the list

  • I'd take the 5-10 oz engelhard bars if they're loaf style, otherwise the 50-1 oz maples

  • PokermandudePokermandude Posts: 2,713 ✭✭✭
I'd likely take the maples. The 5-10oz Engelhards would be a close second choice though.

  • I'd take the maples first and the 90% second. Its easier for me sell portions, use for trade, or lay a whole bunch of things out and look at the shiney stuff on a table...

    Hmmm

I'd probably go for 5 engelhards if they were poured...

It's all about what the people want...

  • I'd go with the $75 in 90%. Yes, it may add up to slightly less silver (unless all the coins are uncirculated), but there's the joys of cherry-picking through them for better dates and varieties. You get bullion value plus numismatic entertainment for the inner young numismatist!
