A fun moment in the creation of a YN

erwindocerwindoc Posts: 5,456 ✭✭✭✭✭
My oldest is 7 years old. I have been "grooming" him for a couple of years for coins with little success. Recently, I dug out an old 20th century type set Whitman folder and gave it to him. We sat down and were easily able to fill many of the holes with the stuff I had given him already plus extra things I had in a folder. He has taken a liking to the steel cents for some reason and asked me to take him to the local B&M to look for more! I was thrilled and my wife just rolled her eyes!!!

Sounds good! I have given away countless coins to nieces and nephews etc, and built two Indian head cent collections for my daughters, but none have ever expressed any follow through interest.
PS - I will give all the steel cents you want - I got rolls of them!

I think 7 is a little young, but I could be wrong. Anyway it's great if he has interest.

I figure if you give them a coin and they don't eat it and can bring it out upon request 5 days later, then they aren't to young. image

I agree that 7 is young. He hasnt lost any of the stuff I have given him, yet. It never hurts to prod him along the way either!

I disagree. My daughter is six and she is already an expert at the art of preservation. I gave her a proof 1961 quarter last year, raw, and last month she shows it to me (I have no idea where she kept it, except perhaps somewhere in one of her stash boxes) and it still looks perfect.

The steel cents were my first love too. Though I was still able to pull them out of circulation when I was 7. I made my dad promise to bring me home any that he got in trade at his station and ended up with about 20. image

I was 7 when we started this set using my allowance with a little help from dad and gramp image

Now that girls don't seem as bad as once thought, some funds go to that endeavor instead of coins. But the set linked in my sig line has help keep the interest going. image

My oldest grandson got serious about it a year ago, a couple months after turning 6. He's been to many coin shows, and has filled, or started, more books than I'd ever imagined. At 7 he's still interested, although thank God he's not dragging it all out every single day and spending hours obsessed with it! First grade has zapped some of the energy out of him. But he's definitely looking forward to the next show. I don't know what age is too young, but if they have that spark, let it grow into the size fire they want!

Steelies really jazzed me when I was a beginning YN aged ten.

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

To be brutally honest, the funnest part in the creation of a 7 year old YN happened 7 years and 9 months ago!
