Saftest way to do a eBay transaction -

keojkeoj Posts: 1,057 ✭✭✭✭
Looking for some help. From a buyers perspective, what is the best way to protect oneself in an eBay transaction? In this case, seller looks okay (100% feedback), has sold coins, but this is a larger transaction than typical. Do folks recommend Paypal direct, Paypal with a CC, etc. Thanks.

Your protected under PayPal's buyer protection under your described scenarios. Using your cc will also offer you further protection by your cc company.

Excellent advice. Also, communication with seller if there are any problems is also important. Ebay will reveiw your messages to seller in the event of a dispute.

Try to avoid sellers not located in the US.

Credit card payment from paypal offers great backup protection, but keep in mind paypal will not let you change payment method to a credit card if there is a cash balance in your paypal account. You have to request transfer of balance to your bank first. Once requested you are free to pay using credit card, but you have to "change payment method" (each time) during paypal checkout.

    .
    you say larger than normal

there is a lot of blue sky there

if your transaction is over 10K then you will need to send multiple payments and it is good to reference each payment with the ebay transaction number and possibly the previous paypal payment transaction number in the event there are problems with the transaction, then you are covered - paypal informed me that $10k is the max per single transaction but there can be multiple payments of 10k for a transaction

also, registered shipping should be requested so if there is anything wrong with the package you are covered

i've not used CC via paypal for transactions, only paypal direct or check so i cannot comment on paypal with CC, but it should be the same or better

That is not true, I've done transactions over $10,000 with no problem.

This is not true. It does not protect the buyer from anything. It protects only the seller.
