  • Today,my wife showed me the bill for the emergency air transport by helicopter I received shortly after I arrived at my local hospital. When I saw the bill for the 90 minute flight I almost had another stroke! $25,784 !!!!!. Why do I feel this charge is a rip off?. What really chaps my hide is the treatment I received at the second hospital was no different than the treatment I could have received at the first hospital before I was transported. I think I smell kick backs$$$$$.

yeah those "life-flights" are costly for many reasons. better than a bus, though.

glad you survived the ordeal and are on the mend.

Maybe somebody told the operator "he's got coins, send the helicopter." Seriously though, great to hear you pulled through, and are almost back to normal. The newest treatments for stroke often result in 99% recovery. Even 100% depending on how Green Bay does in the playoffs.

Prayers for your complete recovery John. Do not lose hope that you will do so. Doctors are only human just like us and have made many a prognosis before but some of their patients defied the odds and went against their doctors prediction and fully recovered. May you be one of them John. God Bless!!!

  • UPDATE! I wanted to let others here know that things are continuing to improve at this end. Although I am still numb on my left side arm and leg I now walk unaided I don't seem to have lost any strength. My face dropped on one side shortly after the stroke and that too has improved. My best hope is that I can recover at least 90% of what I had before this stroke. My double vision has also improved so I hope to be able to drive again soon.

  • Well, I am still alive! I believe things are improving at a slow rate. I now have full use of all limbs and require no assistance for all my normal daily needs and tasks. Although my left arm and left leg still has the pins and needle feeling I still have 100% of the pre stroke strength in both the affected limbs. My face has returned to normal and you cant tell I ever had a stroke if you didn't know me. I still have double vision when using both eyes I believe this is due to the optical mussels in my right eye not working correctly. Both eyes provide me with clear vision when used one at a time. I believe I can correct this by adding some prism lens glasses to bring both images together. I really need my vision as I have been stuck in my home since my release from the hospital!. I have a brand new sports car just sitting in the garage 100% paid for and screaming for a driver!!!. My total costs associated with my stroke stands now at $62,732.42 If you or your famialy doesn't have insurance go out and get some TODAY! if I would have had health insurance my out of pocket would have been less than $3,000!. I now have FULL coverage health insurance my wife's job provides.

Great to hear you're doing better GB. Insurance is like a port-o-potty, it stinks until you absolutely have to use it, then it's a life saver.

For my wife and I, both healthy and in our mid-30's, it's over $700/month premium with a $3500 deductible for me and a $5000 deductible for her. Those of you with corporate insurance thru your company, count your blessings.

that's good news. I agreed 100% on the insurance. It maybe a big chunk to pay but its better than being left with nothing but recovering. We count our lucky stars that we went all in when we did. The big C hit a year later.

  • Well today I hit a milestone in my stroke recovery!. After two months being stuck in the house I decided to get in my new sports car and see if I was still able to drive. With my left leg and arm still pins and needles numb I drove my 5 speed manual transmission car!. I took it into heavy traffic, I took it on a high speed drive. I was surprised to see that I was able to concentrate on shifting and driving after such a big stroke!. Believe me when I say the thought involved in driving is very complex and for a recent stroke survivor to be able to preform it safety is a big accomplishment!. I am beginning to believe I still might have a second chance in life. I still have double vision but I just patch one eye and I see only a single object thus making driving possible. This whole stroke thing has made me aware that life should never be taken for granted!. You should live each and every day like its your last day on earth!.

  • All is still moving ahead in my recovery. Next week I will return to work part time and then transition into full time. I have met countless people who have told me about a formerly dynamic father/mother/brother/sister who had a stroke and then spent the rest of his/her life dully nodding off in a wheelchair/sofa/armchair.
I understand those stories. It’s hard work to get better, and I, too, hear the siren call of Depression.
“Give up,” it says. “Sit still. You've gone as far as you can go.”

But for me, depression is not the answer. Depression is death, and I've got a long way to go before I’m ready to begin my descent down that dark and dreary road.
A stroke is a vicious event. It happens in an instant; the recovery, if any, takes place asymptotically: no matter how much progress you make, you never reach your goal of 100% recovery — but you keep trying. The 4th of next month marks the 90th day since my stroke. I feel I have progressed far in those 90 short days. I came out of the hospital unable to walk without aid, But now I walk unaided. I not only can drive my car again, but I again can do it second nature like before my stroke. I can care for myself and all my needs without help. I suffer NO PAIN, I still have far to go in my recovery but I feel its going in the right direction.
