Question about the 1942/1-D dime

ajmanajman Posts: 1,359 ✭✭✭
I recently picked up one of these in EF-40 but my question is why it's known as a 42/1? Please take a look at this photo and look where the 2 is and underneath it, I just don't see the 1. I see a 7 if anything under the 2. Can someone explain what I'm seeing or not seeing? link

The coin in the link is what the 42/1-D looks like. The 1 is not as evident in the D mint coin as it is in the P mint coin. The bottom of the 4 is the best PUP on this coin.

Because the fact that there is an undeniable 42/41p mint coin leads people to jump to conclusions about it and see what they what to see

I cropped the image in your link and highlighted the traces of the underlying 1 visible on the variety. Of course the primary pick-up is the bottom of the 4. I believe this variety was confirmed with overlay photos decades ago, so I didn't repeat that work.

John - are you saying you don't believe in the 42/1-D??

It's just as real as the "P"...just a little different overdate...but definitely there.

Get the 42/1 much easier to see the overdate
