I'm no expert on OPC cards but isn't there way to much chipping around the edges. I understand rough cut but I didn't think chipping was that accepted.
Working my way to #1 1979 Topps Hockey I know it's going to be tough!
<< <i>I'm no expert on OPC cards but isn't there way to much chipping around the edges. I understand rough cut but I didn't think chipping was that accepted. >>
I've seen a lot of 8s and 9s from the OPC issue with the chipping so my guess is PSA is somewhat lenient with it.
<< <i>That's a lot of shipping on the left edge for a 9. I don't believe chipping should be acceptable for this issue. Rough cuts, sure, shipping, eh. >>

ROFL, wow, I usually proof read too. That left edge is really unsightly.
If Rick sees this: Have you ever tried to cross this to a PSA 10 or are you happy to leave it where it is? I agree with everyone else, this is the best-looking high-grade OPC Gretzky.
<< <i>Another Gretzky better looking than the PSA 10:
From what I understand about KSA, there's a good chance that card is either sheet cut or trimmed. And since it's coming from a knowledgeable seller, you can bet that it has no chance to land in a PSA 9 holder. If it did, it'd be there already.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
<< <i>The 9 that was originally posted only has great centering going for it. The PD on the right and left is too distracting. I don't like it a bit. >>
Bob, if you're talking about the vertical lines on the front of the card, they're supposed to be there.
For collectors of this card you either like the lines or you don't (I happen to like the lines, so for me it's a plus) first issue's typically have less roughcut and better, deeper color.
You're picky with cards/know what you want (as I and most others are) so, I have a question. If you were to collect this card...would the centering of the orange drop in the oilers logo on the bottom right of the card matter to you? It does for me, but for a lot of collectors it doesn't...so, I'm just curious as to your opinion on it (I wouldn't buy one that was off-centered because it's too much of a distraction IMO).
I treat the PD on the OPC rookie the same as the print/line that is often found on the Bird/Magic RC. Can't stand it. If there's copies out there without, why buy one with I say?
Regarding the logo, I think it matters as well. Most never even look at it, but on the ones that are way off it's distracting.
The Gretzky rookie is one of the worst rookie cards of any superstar. The face shot is atrocious. You can't see him. Why is a hockey player looking at the ceiling ? The scoreboard is not the answer because of where he is on the ice. That is not the Oilers uniform color either.
The Bobby Orr rookie card is great. The Mario card is great. The Bobby Hull, Jacques Plante, and others are great. The Gretzky rookie is one ugly card IMO. His 2nd and 3rd year cards are much better shots. His best rookie card is his 79 Oilers postcard.
<< <i>The face shot is atrocious. You can't see him. Why is a hockey player looking at the ceiling ? The scoreboard is not the answer because of where he is on the ice. >>
He could be looking at an auxiliary scoreboard. It's also quite common for a puck to be shot/deflected high in the air.

Something fishy going on here. The auction only ended 6 days ago. Not enough time to definitively determine if a bidder is going to renege. I'd stay away. And no, it never had a prayer to sniff $8,000.

jeff are you serious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the chipping on the PSA 9 is much more severe then then MY BGS 9 . the top edge is just normel rough cut and is not even close to as bad as the PSA 9.
The edges might be easier to see if the card is scanned with a black background. I agree there definitely is a difference between the two, but both appear to have chipping.

Gotta agree with Mike. I don't think that is a rough cut, but some major chipping.

Also does that flip look off? Maybe its just me.
Current eBay Auction:
For me, it's a no brainer....that 9 is soooo much nicer than that, er..wait the 10.
The orange drop on the bottom right hand corner (in the Oilers logo) is dead-on centered (this is tough for this card).

Old style flip.

I hope this puppy hits the 8k mark like Mullins suggested.

Because of the chipping, I would not bid.
I also think that is too much chipping for a nine or the left edge.
To me the nicest one is the SGC graded one but I would be just as happy with a nice 8 if I collected that card in graded form.

Can someone explain what won't cross about this card other than the fact it's priced at less than half of this current 9.
I heard that KSA is "psa" for canada... So would someone take a shot?

That particular card is definitely sheetcut and probably has at least one crease in it.
