can't win 'em all...

Have you noticed that when you get out sniped, a coin you thought might be cool to have all of the sudden becomes the coin you NEED ?
I thought for sure that I'd get this one with a stong snipe, it's graded VF 20, even with the bad pics it's easy to see that it's original and undergraded, so
I bid it pretty close to XF, but no....I should've realised that bust halves in old fatty NGC holders are something you don't see too much of and went a little higher.
Anyone here win it by chance ?

braddick

Probably the sight rim bumps kept it from VF35.
Nice, but there are others.

Did you consider it might have an Overton attribution that lends a value which trumps the market value of assigned grade for a common variety by a couple points?

I was watching that one and decided not to bid. It is not a rare variety, but I forget which one it was (it wasn't one I needed). The rim bumps bothered me. NGC, in my opinion, does not do CBHs very well. I feel comfortable giving PCGS "the benefit of a doubt" when a coin is holdered, but not NGC. I have had too many "original" looking pieces have problems on close inspection ... and their Overton attributions are, well, not spot on.

Meltdown

The rim bumps don't bother me too bad.
That's exactly the look myself and many other bust half nuts look for and pay up for.
It does appear to have better detail than vf20.

o-105, R3...not rare, I'd guess someone likes these holders.

Justlooking

Nice-looking coin, but that's some big bucks for that grade. A better one will come along.

ricko

I never lost a snipe on a coin I wanted...... if you really want it..go nuclear... Cheers, RickO

Yes, when a coin is obviously undergraded make sure to consider net grading from some hidden flaw. --Jerry
