Mike Napoli

So Mike Napoli lives in my area and he was supposed to do a signing this past Saturday Dec 3rd at a card store. The guy who owns the card store knows Napoli personally and he even trains his parents at one of the gyms down here. His parents one day suggest that Napoli should come so a signing so they arrange everything and its on for Dec 3rd as a favor from friend to a friend.

Come about 2 days before, I guess Napoli bails out because the agent got involved and supposedly wants a cut on the autographs and such. Anyways - you know what goes down hill and before you know it, this signing isn't happening. WTF!

I personally think that Napoli should of said "screw you" to his agent and done the signing, instead he didnt even show. That really sucks. He owes you know who a call personally to fix things. This guy who owns the store invested in Jerseys and cards and balls and 8x10's and promoting the event. I feel bad for the guy because honestly, if any of you would meet him, hes a real nice guy too which makes it even worse.

Mike Napoli lost a bit of respect imo.

These guys sign contracts with marketing agents stating they can only sign a certain amount of autographs, can only sign in certain places, can only sign certain items, they have to charge a certain amount, etc....

He could've said screw off to his agent but it's much easier to blow off the gig than have to deal with a potential legal hassle. You need to understand these agents aren't the same agents they use to negotiate contracts, they are independent pushy marketing people who are only in it for the money and usually have no significant connection to the player. They are constantly reminding the players when they can and can't sign according to their contract.

If I've learned anything in life, it's that there are TWO sides to every story............

maybe there was never an agreement in place and the card shop owner ran with it, thinking that his relationship with his parents would make it happen....

    where was this signing advertised?

    IMF
Successful dealings with Wcsportscards94558, EagleEyeKid, SamsGirl214, Volver, DwayneDrain, Oaksey25, Griffins, Cardfan07, Etc.

Nick , you're being far too objective for the average person. Keep up the good work.--- Sonny

Just wanted to add , I realized after the fact it wasn't " really " Nick , but too bad because it sounded just like him anyway.

  • We have a card show down here called Danias Card Show. It was advertised on the monthly email that goes out to over 2000 subs. The store owner promoted through his face book and word of mouth also goes along way in this card collecting community.

The store owner really does know him personally. Everything was ready to go until the agent got involved. Its really that simple. Baseball politics suck. Period.

  • These people need to man up and tell their agents to go pound sand. If I want to go to a card shop and sign autographs for kids and fans, then Im going to do it. All cause his agent wanted a few bucks. Seriously how much money would his agent really make on this event, a few hundred bucks? I would fire him in an instant. The greed of these agents is beyond stupidity.

so the card shop owner, has a World Series star (from only a month ago) agreeing to appear at his show and it's ONLY advertised via Facebook & word of mouth?

no newspaper advertising; no Signings Hotlines notification, etc.?

The guy invests in balls, 8x10's, etc. and advertises on Facebook?

come on, something doesn't add up; i doubt there was any real agreement here

where are Napoli's parents in all of this mess?

for what its worth, it was on Signings Hotline too. Also on his facebook page when he announced it, there was a comment by Napoli's mother about it so it was ligit at least in his mind.
  • I can't blame the OP being upset but I think it shows some naivete on the shop owner's part - nothing is done these days without some sort of actual contract / agreement through a player's representative / agent or whatever - even with someone whom he has some familiarity with.
