Two Recently Graded Maundy Sets

I sent over a couple of Maundy sets with my last submission. I was largely happy with the grades but I have to throw out a brickbat to PCGS about the job they did slabbing these coins. Firstly the mix of pronged holders and old style holders in one set is very distracting, use one type or the other guys, don't mix them. Secondly, the rubber disc they use for the 1d's is too small, the plastic oozes over the sides of the coin and obscures a not inconsiderable amount of the coin. I've had several sets graded now and all the 1d's have been the same. Usually I like the look of coins in PCGS holders but in this case I think it detracts from the sets.

1902 Set - graded out 1d: PL63, 2d: PL63, 3d: PL63, 4d: spots removed. The set had been in a felt lined box for a long time and the toning didn't do any favours to the coins, especially the reverses. The spot on the neck of Eddy on the 4d looks like someone flicked off a bit of gunge and took off some of the toning with it. I paid hardly anything for this set so I was prepared to take a bath on these.

1907 Set - graded out 1d: PL66, 2d: PL67, 3d: PL66, 4d: PL66. Sparkly proof like coins with pretty toning. Just what I like to see in a Maundy set image

Very nice coins in the '07 set, just what I like also.

Attractive coins, but.... PCGS mixed holder types within a single set? Seriously? I'd be calling and demanding a reholder at their expense. That's inexcusable.
  • Great pictures also. I have an 1898 set that looks just like your toning. However I am missing the 4 pence piece out of the set. Any ideas on where to purchase the 4 pence? I have asked this question in quite a few forums but so far have not come up with anything. Help!!!image

Yes, that's always a pain. I have an 1894 set with no 4d and (as shown above) a 1902 set with no graded 4d. Buying a whole new set for just one coin seems a little excessive. The other problem is finding a coin that matches the toning of the others in the set.

    Great looking sets.

We should make a want list of the missing odds and bits of Maundy sets belonging to members. So far we have a 1894 4d, a 1896 1d, a 1898 4d and a graded 1907 4d, preferably toned as above. Anybody looking for a 1882 rainbow toned 4d?

  • Great idea Dimitri. How do we go about that? I have listed my want list on two different forums and never get any response back. How about auction sites? Would that be the way to find them? Any suggestions by members greatly appreaciated.

Thank you John. On the ideas I'm doing well, it's when I have to enforce them that I'm having trouble, just like the Greek state with tax collection. image Seriously though, the only places where I remember seeing Maundy odds and bits are on Colin Cooke's site and in Karl Stephen's lists. However, I've noticed that more often than not, these coins are usually from the early 19th century and very rarely (if ever) from the 1890s or the 1900s.

Still, even if someone is lucky enough to locate the one denomination missing from his set, I think it's rather impossible for that coin to match the other three, something that Mark has already pointed out.

  • I can't help myself , got to add the loose coins seen on ebay etc are almost certainly not Maundy money , they are run of the mill circulated currency. There is an extremely thin chance some are from Maundy sets but its highly unlikely. A set of circulated coinage doesnt = a Maundy set. Having said that , i do have quite a few loose and dfferent denominations , i see it noted a 1907 4d is required ? , but can't work out where or for who's set , i have a rather nice rainbow almost toned example.
