A very PQ Bust Dollar in EF-45
In another thread someone asked if the early Bust dollars are now over priced. My answer was that many of them are, but that truly choice original, properly graded pieces are not. Here is an example.
This 1797 Bust dollar is perfect for the grade. The surfaces are original, and it has at most microscopic defects. I probably paid too much for this, but how often do you see one like this? The variety numbers are Bolender 1 or BB-73.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

My favorite date in the series, followed by 1803 and 1794!

<< <i>I am looking for one of those in VG with a skin like that as a type piece as the transition form small eagle to large that I have in type for half dollars. I think your piece is really nice and a study to what these should look like albeit in a grade level part of the pool that few will swim in. >>
A nice, original VG is probably as hard to find as this EF-45. Over the years I have not seen that many well circulated Bust dollars, and I've seen even fewer of them with the original skin. I don't why it is that so many well circulated Bust dollars have been cleaned.
BTW, you post indicates that you have a 1796-7 half dollar. Now THAT is a tough coin in any grade. Congratulations if you have one!

No not what I meant to imply, I have a nice original flowing half and and nice Heraldic eagle half dollar but not a draped Bust with the small eagle or a early dollar coin. Since I will never get 96-97 half a Dollar coin is the perfect fill in that will kill 2 birds with one stone.

At a recent Baltimore show, I had an Bust Dollar in a PCGS XF-40 holder that was CACd and 100% original. A collector pulled it out and loved it. He had a certified XF-45 and wanted to "upgrade" to the XF-40 . I believe Bust Dollars are less about the number on the holder and so much more about the coin in the holder.

i agree; for this series i put much more emphasis on the coin and not the holder - extremely tough to find examples with eye appeal that meet my criteria
