Thanks Mike. Glad you and Kevin enjoy looking at cards. So do I. I love when you guys post pictures.
Michael Jordan. Many great things have been said about this person, but playing baseball isnt one of them. I still remember pulling the Upperdeck bonus card from the 91 packs and it felt like I had hit the lottery. So im sure you could imagine the excitement when I pulled out his actual rookie. I thought this thing was gonna be huge. The card store I use to go to said that there was about 1 per box and I remember I kept buying a little bit of packs every few days until I finally nabbed this one. I don't think I ever bought a pack of 94 Uppereck after that. With the amount of money I put in trying to pull this card, I should of just bought it from the card store and saved myself the hassle. Unfortunately this card never had much of a future just like Jordans baseball career - but its still his baseball rookie card regardless.
Randy Johnsons rookie card. This is the 2nd key card in that 89 Upperdeck set behind Griffey although its only at $8 bv. If someone wanted a RJ Rookie, this was going to be it most likely.
I Pulled this one out earlier today. I would of paid $5 if I saw this card in mint condition but dealers really don't carry it. This card was actually listed more than the Canseco at one point, that's after Canseco peaked of course and after a string of embarrassing moments such as the ball on the head and that whole pitching fiasco that cost him the rest of the 93 season due to surgery on his shoulder. Anyways, this is another player who had an amazing career but wasnt as popular as other players. He finished his career just short of 500 with 493 homeruns. Thats actually more than Canseco and I think of him more of a power hitter than Fred Mcgriff. So Glad I finally got this card.
Easily one of my favorite players. I'm from Florida so you can imagine how excited I was when we got him for the Marlins, but about a week later he was gone to the Mets. lol. This ones a Fleer Ultra insert. These card companies really gotta stop making these cards with black boarders. Its hard enough pulling these cards out but do they feel they have to make it even more challenging for us?
Quite honestly, I hate both of those UD Nolan Ryan cards. Not a fan of the triple exposure in the first one and the photo in the second is awful. Blurry and just not well-done at all. Ugh.
Really? Hmm I thought everybody was a fan of those cards as well. As they say then, to each their own Thanks for checking this out.
So this is the Bo Jackson Topps Rookie version. Looks like the Royals released the same photo to the card companies because the 86 Donruss Rookies set included the same photo. Would of been interesting if 1 more company would of used the same photo too.
How about this blast from the past as well. The was the best card in that set. Sure he had a regular issue card (which I also have) but the foil was way more valuable. Kinda happened the other way around for Manny Ramirez. Hopefully once he gets into the hall, people again will notice his numbers and he will be popular amongst collectors again but I'm not so sure, Eddie Murray had great number but aside from his rookie, he has no real popularity in the baseball card world.
Jeff Bagwells a name I remember well because when Topps Stadium club debuted back in late 1991 - he came with the series 2 and for a while he was the hottest card in that set. I remember him and Phil Plantier were big names in series 2. Plantier died down but Bagwell remained. He went on to win an mvp award later on in his career but I remember he was having a killer season in 94 but he kept having his wrist broken by pitchers. I remember watching espn and after like 2 times of having it broken, some pitcher pitched a little to on the inside and almost hit his wrist and Bagwell looked like he was going to pound on the guy. I still want his Stadium Club release even though its BV is $3 but this one here appears to be his most valuable rookie - probably cause its from the traded set.
From that set is Mike Mussinas rookie as well. I remember his Upperdeck 91 rookie was a nice card to get in packs when they first came hot. Not as good as Todd Van Poppel however. lol
Great thread. I actually have a box dedicated to 1980's cards that I remember growing up in the 1980's. Of course, I had to get the again. I still go through them every now and then. I think every card you posted in the 80's is in that box except the Ripken rookies.

I have a "permanent collection" box that is not only the valuable stuff, but also the "memorable" stuff.
Obviously, the Bo Jackson FB/BB card isn't that valuable, but I feel like it should be a part of my collection.
Thanks for the kind comments and taking the time to read up on these cards. They definitely take me back as well writing about them. I'm really glad you guys are enjoying this. This isn't about bragging or seeing who has one in better condition - its about my love for the sport and the players and cards that have made them amazing along the way and just wanting to share with other amazing card collectors.
EASPORTS - I know exactly the card your talking about. Its the Black and White one that shows him with a bat but hes also wearing shoulder pads. There was this rumor when that card first came out saying how in was printed in very limited numbers so as you can imagine - everyone wanted one. Of course as we know today, that wasn't the case but that card sure did quite cause a frenzy in the hobby back in 1990. All my $5 bv cards and up (unless they're really condition sensitive) goes into the penny sleeves/top loaders. My cents cards I keep them in those plastic 150 count card holders and may card that are $1-4 I keep in my binder.
I'm almost done showing my cards that are in my top loaders but I do have 2 really cool ones that I'm gonna end with and you don't wanna miss it if you like looking at cards. One is pretty phenomenal actually.
Heres that Roger Clemens I pulled out yesterday from the 86 Donruss series. Ive been eying this card for a couple of months now and even went on eBay to see if I can pick one up for like $2-3 bucks. Eventually I broke down and just figured what the heck and bought a wax box. Got this one in the last 5 or 6 packs. I would of been extremely disappointed if I didn't pull this one.
Heres Manny Ramirez's Topps 1992 Rookie. Man I hated 1992 Topps and I still do.
Again from the 89 Upperdeck - this guy I think could be a hall of fame contender but I think his name has been linked up with steroids and if that accurate, then no way will it happen. Remember that killer season he was having in 93 - where did that come from? Its like once he left the Brewers and went with the Padres - He suddenly became the hottest player that year (easily). Not sure if you guys can see this or even noticed but he has 2 gold teeth and they happen to be his initials "G.S" - Tacky! lol
Pudge - Arguably and non-arguably the best catcher ever (Hes defintely up there with the ranks of Carlton Fisk, Johnny Bench and Campy. I remember him being the MVP back in 99. This guy will probably be a first time ballot HOF'er. This ones his rookie from also the 91 Fleer update set.
When I think of Curt Schilling, I think of that bloody sock.
I've really enjoyed this thread. So far I've only seen about 5 cards I don't have somewhere in a binder at my mom's house as part of a set or in a penny and top loader.
Thanks for reading Rebelas. Glad you're enjoying it. Unfortunately I'm just about done.
Ill still be updating this but its when I get new cards and I don't every week so it wont be updated as regularly.
What I might start doing is posting other cards that are in my collection but that are maybe just worth a couple of dollars if that. Basically any cards that I was fascinated with as a kid.
There are certain cards that Ive noticed that don't really depreciate in value - they just continue to go up really or have maintained really well and about 4 players that I could think of that have been great when it comes to collecting - Mickey Mantle, Pete Rose, Roberto Clemente and Babe Ruth cards. This Mantle I got off ebay. I'm afraid to say what I got it for because I over paid. Unfortunately I wasn't too familiar with PSA at the time of purchase and so I learned the hard way. I didn't know what the oc meant and it cost me. Still a beautiful card none the less but without any disqualifiers would of been much better of course.
This one I'm sure everyone is familiar with. Its probably Babe Ruths most famous card (Not most Valuable) - the 1933 Goudey is PSA 6. This card I purchased less than a month ago purely for investment. Of course I love the card too. Goudey came out with 4 Babe Ruth cards and this low numbered Yellow one is the rarest of them all. I think I got a pretty good deal for this one. I haven't even really told my friends that I have one because of its value. Only a couple know really and that's it. Its crazy to pay so much for a card and then you get it and your holding it and then you're thinking, cool - now what? You just put it away and that's pretty much it. I once read that when Gretzky bought his Famous Honus Wagner, his dad said it was a dumb investment at the time - that's when he purchased it for around $450,000 back in 1991 and then when he sold it in 2009, he got about 2.8 million for it. Insane. I'm not expecting this card to reach that status (at least not while any of us are alive) but I recently bought a house but when the day comes that this card can pay off the rest of my mortgage, its gone! What good is it keeping it forever. If I passed away today and someone in my family obtained it, I'm sure thy would sell it off immediately. You've gotta know when to let go is all.
LOVE that Ruth! Very nice. However, unless you have a very small mortgage, don't expect the card to pay it off any time soon! LOL
PS So maybe you paid a few hundred dollars too much for that Mantle ... big deal ... seems like you have now done your homework and you learned your lesson. GOOD LUCK with your future purchases.
STAY HEALTHY!
Doug
Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
DBONE - I have a 30 year mortgage. Got about 28 years to go. By then this card will be over 100 years old so you never know! Could pay off my last 5 years by then. Who knows right?
I went to the monthly card show here in S Florida. and there's was some pretty good stuff that Ive been wanting so I finally decided to pick up.
This Canseco is from the 91 Donruss Elite. I believe this was the first year Donruss was putting these things out. These cards are pretty much impossible to pull out imo. I picked this one up for $15. Great deal I thought. Especially for a big Canseco fan such as myself.
The key card in the Topps 2000 Traded set. BV is $20 - Picked this one up for $10
My dealer had about 32 Wax racks packs of these 1984 Topps. Get this - $1 per rack pack. How awesome is that!! My friend and I split them - about 15-16 rack packs a piece - each containing 3 packs. After was was said and done - I pulled out 2 of these. He got 0. lol. Talk about a hard pull. I of course gave one of them to by buddy. When you think about it - we went through over 90 packs. We did pull out like 8 Ripkens, 7 Tony Gwynns and about 7 Mike Schmidts, Ozzies, Bretts, 4 Darryl Strawberrys and pretty much the rest of the key cards. Talk about a hard pull. Ive always did want to rip these open. Now Ive officially got that out of my system.
Nice pickups. That Cabrera is sharp. At the rate he is going, I think he has a good shot at being a HOFer. Though, I guess we could have said the same thing about Canseco at one time.
This is now the 2nd AROID I own. The first his his 94 SP which I just picked up at the last card show before today's. This is the Highlight of that set. I think next one I want to get from him is the Fleer update.
I picked up this little number from my dealer. This was Jose Cansecos phone bill back in his hey days in 89. You can tell my the handwriting that its a woman - his wife at the time - Esther. I met Canseco this same year but in February and Esther was sitting next to him while he was signing. She was very quiet (not the attention seeking wives that most famous people have today.) I remember but she seemed really sweet. This is now one of the highlights from my PC. Its going in a frame. As they say, one mans junk is another mans treasure
Ive wanted this card for the past 3 months maybe - really bad too. Ive been looking on eBay lately my I finally picked one up in person yesterday. This card was pretty hot back in around 91. I'm pretty sure it peaked at around $45. Today its listed at $10. This one and the fleer update are Docs only card from 84. Of course the fleer update is the one that you really want to have. I did come across one of those last weekend but the condition wasn't to my liking. Ill get one of those real soon. That and the Puckett too.
Another from 84 fleer however this one comes from the regular set. Now it joins my collection of 83 Traded, 84 Donruss and 84 Topps (I picked up 2 of those yesterday ripping through all those rack packs. lol. This is a tough one to find centering but this was the best I could do for now. I'm satisfied.
This is the Strike Out Kings card from the 1982 Topps set. This is the oldest Nolan Ryan I own. I have the 84, 85, 87, 88, and so on. Eventually I would like to pick something up from the mid 70's and even earlier.
If Jose Canseco and Ken Caminiti had a love child, you'd probably have Jason Giambi. I remember this guy being the next big thing in the early - mid 2000's. Once it was proven that he was using ofcourse, his image never recovered. Like Canseco he started out in the A's and had played with the Yankees. He even came back to Oakland but his numbers were too poor and was soon sent away. This card can be found in the 1991 Traded set. I picked up the set for $4 because I wanted this card but other key cards from that set include Pudge Rodriguez's and Jeff Bagwells rookies. Great Power Hitter but I don't see him in the majors for more than another 2 years.
So I recently busted open a box of 92 Fleer Ultra. This has probably got to be my favorite set of the 90's. From the glossy look to the cool inserts to even the smell of the cards. lol. I had fun opening these up. Its kinda funny that they decided to put all the big names into series 1. If you notice, series 2 doesn't have one card listed in the price guide. Anywho, I pulled this one out. $5 BV card so it goes in my collection.
This is actually my first Puhols card and ONLY one that I have so far. I really want his 2001 Topps Traded above the other ones. This one came with a price tag of $45 so I asked for $40 and got it. Felt it was a fair price seeing how on eBay these sell anywhere between $40-70 raw.
I know, I know - another crummy Canseco card and this ones not even $5 BV but for those who have followed this topic in the past probably picked up that I'm a huge Canseco fan. I did have this card already but it was in ok condition. I wanted one as nice as possible so I recently picked up a huge lot of Canseco cards off eBay and this was the one I was waiting for to add to my collection. Say what you want but this man was the shiznik back in the late 80's early 90's. BTW - IF anyone has a bunch of his cards and are willing to part with them, let me know. Maybe we can work something out. I have almost 2000 of his cards and about 470 are non doubles that I keep in my Canseco binder. Im always looking to add to that.
