gold and silver pandas

what are your predictions for gold and silver pandas in the future? some of these that are low mintage are starting to fetch big bucks on ebay now. will they go higher? is it time to get in the panda market or out? your thoughts please...

  • We are either at, or nearing the peak in pandas. Its time to bail on low mintage issues like the 1998 1/10th and 1/2 or the 1995 1/2. When you can sell 1/10th of an oz of gold for almost the price of a full oz, why wouldnt you?

    What about the silver issues?

    sell high, i agree.

but i am wondering about a few things:

    1. i have read more than once that more and more chinese collectors are entering the market than ever before.
    2. it seems that some of the mintages that were supposedly high to begin with are recently being determined to have low surviving populations...like the 2002 1/10. the mintage was 150K but the surviving estimate is less than 9.5K.
    3. the recent mintages are much much higher than before...making the earlier dates even more rare by comparison.
    4. china is on track to unseat the us as the worlds biggest economy within 10 to 15 years (or perhaps sooner if things keep going like they are)

maybe they still have some legs? perhaps the silver more so than the gold? time will tell i guess.

    I agree with you.

All your points are valid......except I would challenge that 9.5K survival estimate on the 2002 1/10th. While it is true that 150K were scheduled to be minted, because the design did not change from 2001 the demand fell off a cliff. Just how many were actually sold is speculative.

At one point.....in 2009, I had 80-90 different gold pandas. I was making a run at a complete date/denomination set. I was priced out of the market though as the popularity of pandas skyrocketed. I sold a bit too early, but still did very well. There may be some growth left.....but thats based on the assumption that China does as well financially as you think it will. With Europe faltering, and tens of trillions of unfunded liabilities right here in the U.S. how well can China do with a diminishing external customer base?

gecko109, i appreciate your insight and expertise on the subject.

i have the gold and silver panda buyer's guide, by peter anthony, which seems to be a pretty good resource...are there other reading materials you can recommend? i have also found a lot of stuff on the internet...but anything you can point to as good learning material would be appreciated as well, internet or otherwise.

i would have loved to see that panda collection...impressive.

I just researched on the net and followed ebay results closely.

    Heres some eye candy:

I bought all 5 of these 1995's from 1 shop at $850 when gold was around $800. Sold them all for between $1600-$2200 each. They now bring about $3,200 on ebay.

  • Everyone has got me thinking........... maybe time to sell my Pandas.

If you please, could you offer value of following: 1/4 oz 1983,1989,1998. (I believe the 1998 is a key date) Also, 1/10th oz 1990?

    Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving!

The only Pandas I bought were complete gold sets, mostly in mint boxes. Why do collectors seem to concentrate on the smaller sizes, strictly because they cost less?
