Who likes Sovereigns? New PCGS slabbed examples

OnlyGoldIsMoneyOnlyGoldIsMoney Posts: 3,300 ✭✭✭✭✭
I am picking up Sovereigns when I can - frequently at only modest premiums over melt.

Here are two PCGS MS63 examples purchased off ebay, a 1913 Sydney and 1918 Perth. Photos are compliments of PCGS Cert Verification.

Photobucket works well for me as an uploader program. There is no cost to use their basic service.

One of the most commonly found counterfeits. Know your sovereigns before buying them!

Congrats on the birth year sovereign!

How much gold is in a sovereign? I remember someone saying it wasn't a oz a while back...

Indeed, LukeMarshall picked up a nice coin. I wish they were available for my birth year.

They are 0.2354 oz troy gold.

    Why such an odd weight?

What's odd about it (LOL), it's 113 grains. The modern sovereigns (post 1816) are 22 carat, that is 22/24 gold and 2/24 (usually) copper. Here a a few of mine, up until late 2010 early 2011 I was picking up PCGS and NGC graded pieces for just 5-6% over spot, even in MS66 I picked them up for 10-15% over spot. Now it's all changed, but I still like them. The full sovereigns were used like bullion, they were minted in huge numbers most years and mostly stored in bank vaults.

It's *very slightly* more than 4/17 of a troy ounce, so I use that fraction when calculating gold value.

    A set of all 4 sizes (5, 2, 1 and 1/2 sovereign) is 2 troy ounces.

Most gold coins from that era and earlier were odd weights. For example. the U.S. double eagle has 0.9675 Troy Ounces of gold. The Kruggerrand was the first gold coin with exactly one ounce of gold and was very popular with gold investors for that reason.

I like them but do not usually pick them up as I had difficulty unloading them locally when the time came.
