  • Quick question...Does anyone know why PCGS opens the sets and remove them from packaging prior to grading? Is it just so there are less bulky items on the grading table? I would love to see how they keep the coins separate once removed from packaging.

And are they all removed from the capsules before hitting the grading stations? If not, and the coins are removed from the platens, are the loose ones that fell out of the capsules placed back in the holder or just sent in loose with the others in the capsules?

Need the following OBW rolls to complete my 46-64 Roosevelt roll set:
    1947-P & D; 1948-D; 1949-P & S; 1950-D & S; and 1952-S.
Any help locating any of these OBW rolls would be gratefully appreciated!

All coins are placed in flips before grading and removed from flips for grading, than the coins are returned to the flips. I learned this on these threads when I questioned the grading process.

Also described in the PCGS book "Official Guide to Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detection, Second Edition" on Amazon 'used', but brand new for ten bucks.

If you click the order # link it should take you there. However, if it's not working--and you paid the extra to get your gov. packaging back--it's probably that they're processing that gov. packaging (they give it a grade of 96-return). Same thing happened to me this afternoon. Still waiting for my grades.

My submission has 2 orders...1 order is for the return of the mint packaging...the other says for 10 modern coins but doesn't show grades when clicked.

    Maybe I have to wait.

Yeah, sounds like they're processing the OGP. I got the same notice at 4pm this afternoon.

On the plus side, it means they're working on your submission. Good luck with the grades.

It seems that PCGS started processing a bunch of these yesterday. I sent in five sets, received by PCGS around Dec. 20th.

Are these, tombstones, flags, Mercantis, or non-FS?

Based on the coin numbers, they are FS, but there is no way to tell which version of FS they are... that said, with only 6/25 getting a 70, will be tough to make back the grading fees. 6/25 isn't even close to what the pop reports indicate is the average 70 rate for these coins...

Wow, libertydude, that is painful! I turned in my "two set sealed box" at the FUN convention in Orlando almost 3 weeks ago, so my turn is coming up soon.

I'm not sure I can survive results like yours. My condolences.......

I would like to see the percentage in "70" for all bulk orders.

Based on what I've seen available with labeling most commonly selected on bulk orders - 70's seem available in significantly greater quantities.

That really stinks libertydude, I wish you could have at least hit a 70 on each of the keys to offset some of your costs.

Ouch libertydude!!!! Doesn't make any sense compared to the pop reports and the huge percentage of 70s that the early submissions were gifted. Your box was sealed up just the same as theirs... bummer!!!

I'm glad I bailed on PCGS for my most recent submission because I didn't like what I was seeing in the shared orders lately. Just after New Years, I sent a sealed box of 5 (marked well before the FS deadline) over to NGC for grading. I also sent an additional 5 of the reverse proofs and 2011-S coins for grading that were from a box that was unintentionally opened up prior to grading! Just got the results and they are as follows:

    2011 Bullion - 3 70s, 2 69s
    2011-W Unc - 3 70s, 2 69s
    2011-W PR - 2 70s, 3 69s
    2011-S Unc - 7 70s, 3 69s
    2011-P Rev PF - 9 70s, 1 69

Overall, I'm very happy with 24/35 grading 70 and getting just about 3 complete 70 sets.

I sent two sealed across the street. Only ones that did not grade 70 was the DCAM and the W MS. Bought the 70s on ebay to replace the 69s to have two complete 70 sets. Did buy a PCGS 70 set though. I am done with self grading.

Yeah, it's pretty lame. I was hoping for 1.5 - 2, 70 sets. It's like I paid to get kicked in the nads. Know of anyone tracking NGC population results? Seems like they're more consistent since you just go those awesome results. *cough* unchecks auto renew option *cough*

Wow, so with PCGS perhaps 40K graded sets. Leaves only 60K raw out there maybe and not even complete sets. I wonder how many are now in collectors hands and no longer in dealer's hands.

Congratulations on your outstanding grades, especially for the keys. What kind of a hit, if any, do you expect to take since they are not ERs? I know it shouldn't make a difference, but it seems to. From what I can see on eBay, it looks like around $100/set as compared to ERs. Do you think this will dissipate over time, or do you not care because it is still way better than possibly yielding 7/35 FS 70s?

The better question is how many are still sealed, since opened raw are not even eligible for "set" designation on the non-keys, which means that many fewer complete sets that could ever be slabbed. I have no doubt thousands of sets have been opened, but would love to know whether it's 5,000 or 25,000! As long as these stay popular, sealed sets will do great as sealed boxes are graded and absorbed into the market. (Yes, I realize I am a master of the obvious. image )

At this point, I think it's safe to assume that anyone who knew enough to keep the box sealed up to now will not be dumb enough or otherwise tempted to open it, since the difference in value between a sealed and an open box of 5 is around $1,000. As a result, the population of raw, opened sets is probably pretty fixed by now, and the number of sealed sets will be reduced in direct proportion to the number of graded sets entering dealer and collector inventory. As long as the demand for the graded sets stays steady (or, hopefully, increases), the sealed boxes can only go up as their population goes down. Unfortunately, their value probably will not be helped further by people busting open sealed boxes (other than at a TPG).

Well by the time I sent my order in I didn't have the option of Early Releases. I knew I may take a minor hit in the market because of that, but I didn't think it to be very significant. Maybe 5-10% lower value at the most, but some of the non-ER sets are also selling for the same prices as ER sets, so it's apparent many out there don't care. But yeah, you're right in that I knew the non-ER sets would still give me a better result than sending them to PCGS and crossing my fingers for one complete 70 set...

Well, I didn't do as bad as libertydude, but I continue to reflect the trend of 30% 70's from non-bulk submitters (I submitted in person at the FUN show). Glad I didn't get any below 69, and I did get a 70 of both keys. I'll have to find a couple of W's to trade to complete a 70 set. I've got another sealed box of two, not sure whether to try again or go ATS. I would come out ahead financially just selling the box in most scenarios, but I wanted the fun of submitting and seeing what I did. Wasn't so much fun on the first box. If I had gotten half 70's, I would just submit the other box. Now, not so sure.

I have a feeling that the sealed boxes will command a premium in years to come.

<< <i>Well, I didn't do as bad as libertydude, but I continue to reflect the trend of 30% 70's from non-bulk submitters (I submitted in person at the FUN show).

He sent in two sealed sets, just listed them to have consecutive sets.

Just don't know if FS or not

I brought my unopened box of five [5] sets with me to FUN and submitted them there.
I decided to keep one set out for my raw Eagle Album Album, where I keep the coins
    in their original capsules.

I just checked my submission and got my grades:

    Bullion Issue # 509408 - First Strike
    MS 67
    MS 68
    MS 69
    MS 69

San Francisco Issue # 509189 - First Strike
    MS 69
    MS 70
    MS 69
    MS 69

West Point Issue # 509409 - First Strike
    MS 69
    MS 70
    MS 70
    MS 70

West Point Issue # 509410 - First Strike
    PR 70 DC
    PR 70 DC
    PR 70 DC
    PR 69 DC

    Philadelphia Issue # 509194 - First Strike
    PR 69 - Reverse Proof
    PR 70 - Reverse Proof
    PR 69 - Reverse Proof
    PR 69 - Reverse Proof

I'm a bit disappointed that I didn't get at least one MS 70 of the Non Mint marked issue.
I wanted to keep one set with a "70" Grade. Looks like I might have to locate one on the Bay.
