M.J. Roop Binders - 1971-2006 - A Photo

I've seen a lot of tremendous photos on this site, so I thought I'd share something: a photo of my M.J. Roop binder collection. I know the binders cost more than most of these sets are worth(!), and in some cases many times more than the sets are worth, but I really wanted a nice looking display. When I finally found someone who had almost all the binders, I jumped.

Two 1978 binders because one is a near-complete PSA-authenticated autographed 1978 Topps set (from back when they authenticated each card). Missing about 40 cards. 1978 is the first year I collected cards.
I started with 1971 because that's the year I was born.

Missing 1980 and 1982 binders. If you have them for sale, please let me know.

Back story on the shelving: initially the shelves were about 1/8" too close together top-to-bottom to fit the binders on the shelves with slip covers, so I went and bought new thinner layered wood and cut new shelves. Everything had to be spaced within about 1/32". Because of possible droop and no margin for error, I built in the two reinforcements per shelf (front and back). As luck would have it, I had just enough space to fit the entire collection.

  • That is one slick looking setup!

I've never heard of these binders before. Regarding your line about them being worth more than the sets, I'm curious as to how much these binders originally sold for.
  • Don't know how much it is worth, but I do have a 1962 Baseball Roop binder that I might want to sell if anyone is interested.
From what I can tell, 707 is the DOLLAR STORE compared to deans_cards. For what that guy charges, if I ever bought anything from him I would expect it to be delivered to me in a frickin' limo.

Stadium1978 - They originally sold for $50-60 each. The company went out of business around 2007. Believe it or not, I think their profit margins were pretty tight. You can still get essentially the same binders without the printing on the spines through a few archival storage stores online. About the same $50-60 each, I believe.

Prthd - here are some photos of an individual binder, including a comparison to an Ultra Pro binder to give you an idea of overall size. I hope this is helpful.

Impressive! Thanks for sharing. I have the binders and they are the best. I wish I could find someone that knows how to stencil the spines in silver, as I'd buy a few more.
    Enjoy your collection!

  • ok, they are nice looking but why were they so expensive? did someone say these things were like 50.00 per binder?

There in lies the reason they went out of business.

  • Great looking set up. Be careful standing them up like that. I have had some bottom cards bend in them over time.
