Just make sure you don't get the stuff meant for finger nail polish remover because that frequently has moisturizers and other stuff in it. If you happen to buy the store brand generic at a grocery store, that sometimes is pure acetone.

Hardware store (Lowe's, Home Depot, Walmart). Just keep it away from flames (i.e. don't smoke around it). I have used it for years with no problems. Oh yes, keep it capped and if in a soaking container, make sure you seal it, it evaporates quickly. Cheers, RickO

Don't know if it's just California, but we can NOT get acetone at a hardware store. Or anywhere else. Not even ORIGINAL Energine which was just acetone.

  • You could try this Dude

Far Our Man I'm sorry You said acetone didn't you Dude
  • Found some today at CVS disguised as nail polish remover. It's pure acetone with no additives.
How long should I dip a coin for, etc.?
    TIA
  • My local Wal-Mart carries pure acetone in the nail polish remover section. It's a clear, cylindrical bottle with a small black cap and black lettering that says "100% Pure Acetone" - around $3.00 for a bottle.

Some people have reporting dipping for up to 24hrs, but honestly, if something isn't removed after 15 minutes of being submerged then it's more than likely not coming off with acetone. Be sure to follow the 3-step-dip guide. Use 3 separate dishes that contain acetone. First dish is for the long soak, second dish is to remove what the first dip left behind (just a brief dip) and the last dish is "for good measure".

I was just looking for mine and remembered I loaned it to the neighbor who was looking for lighter fluid for a campfire... Never got it back. and the the nail polish in the house says 'non-acetone' image

can i use lighter fluid, which I did find.

    ha.
  • if the coin is really ginky and not a choice BU, feel free to roll a cotton Q-tip over it to get the nasty stuff off.

Home Depot is an easy source. Make sure to use glass and not plastic. Also don't pour it down the drain when you are done. Acetone really is good for removing paint like gunk. Works great for sharpie ink (which you come across a lot when searching rolls) and good old PVC. It won't remove toning. Make sure to rinse off the coin when you are done. Acetone dries quick and will sometimes leave a small haze if you don't rinse it right as you pull it out of the solution.

I have anecdotally even rolled q-tips over higher grade unc cc morgans that came back 65's after I removed the PVC. I'm not recommending anyone else to do this, but it has worked for me and don't feel it hurt the grade. I had graded them as 65 prior to my submissions.

Yeah, I always buys my acetone at either Lowes or Home Depot. Never a problem finding it. Let the coin soak as long as you want. No need to worry about destroying it.

Use in a well ventilated area away from open flame or pilot lights. The fumes are heavier than air and can collect at ground level before your gas stoves pilot light turns you and your kitchen into a fireworks/barbecue display.

Just make sure to rinse with distilled water if the coin is bronze or copper, NOT tap water. I have had several coins rinsed in tap water later develop bronze disease.

Will the moisturizers etc. in the nail polish remover damage the coin, or just not clean it as well as 100% acetone only?
