Learning the true meaning behind buying the coin, and not the case.

I know this story may sound redundant, but I just wanted to share my joy with you all. All my collecting days I've always wanted to go for a Morgan collection, but never had the kahunas. I was scared that I'd be wrapped up in having to get all 63's, etc... and knowing that if I had one being an XF 40, or AU 50, etc... that they would always catch my eye and inside I'd be going "ouch!". So, I decided to take the plunge and visit the local bullion dealer, and skim through there ungraded Morgans. I found a few really really nice ones that I am tickled pink about, and even an 1904 S in VG shape that I picked up for the price of silver! So I am SUPER excited! I picked up the Dansco Albums for the Morgan's, plopped my coins in the book, and I am HOOKED! I can safely say, that I have now come to truly enjoying the hunt for a nice coin! Today's purchase on ebay (my first Morgan I bought on eBay) and I'd like anyone's input on it. I think I did well, and looking at the typical points of wear I think it would grade nicely if and or when I ever send the coins into get slabbed. But for now, I am ecstatic about the new set I am working on. Keeping the joy of collecting strong here for me!

I think what you are seeing is the result of a scanner image, and the coin will be much more lusterous in hand.

    Hi,

I hope so. I used to use a scanner to image my coins so I know what you are saying, but I am leaning 60/40 toward "something ain't right" - it looks very washed out and the luster in between lettering near the edge looks quite different then other areas. It has a dipped, lightly cleaned/polished sort of look; the white balance does not seem to that far off - hopefully the rest of the image is misleading. So, I can't say if it is the scan. Sellers scan I am sure.

  • The coin you just bought on eBay is a "slider," an AU58 or low end MS (61 or 62)
  • Indeed it is. I could not even say MS from those scans. I did not get the impression the OP thought it was MS but I see now he does.

Welcome to the Morgan Addiction image

I have spent quite alot of time and have obsessed on my set that you see in my sig line.
It really can be a long endeavor as there are 97 coins in the Morgan Dollars Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1878-1921)

Best of luck to you and PM me if I can help answer any questions.
