Fun things at the coin shop today

Today I'm driving to a golf course and suddenly realize I'm going right by the coin shop where I bought all my "starter" collection in the 80's, including my avatar. I was in the wrong lane and had to make some aggressive lane changes to get over in less than a block but I barely made it. Went in and looked around and he had nothing good on display so I was about to leave when he started telling me about some of the coins he had bought lately. He said,"I know you like large cents so I'll get the large cent set to show you." He went into the back and returned with an old large cent album and handed it to me. It was omplete including problem free chain cent, 1799 and 1894. everything after the teens was MS, all brown and all wonderful. Some very, very nice coins in a plain old (maybe even PVC?) album. Super cool.

I looked through it for about 15 minutes and then he asked if I was interested in bank notes. I told him I didn't know much about them but he wanted to show me anyway. Went in the back and returned with a one of a kind bank note from a local bank signed by the bank president. (I guess that was the way it worked back then). One known.

Very cool numismatic items on a day when I wasn't planning anything but golf (and soccer, earlier that morning my son has both goals in their 2-1 win over a scrappy cross town team).

I had Billy, his wife Nicole, Steve, Phillip, and another couple with their son in the shop yesterday. The kid is always bored. I gave him a "Special Olympic" medal out of my token box. His mom laughed.

None of the items are currently for sale. The dealer will determine what to grade and when to sell them and let me know. This was just an eye candy day.

As for the unique note, I've given as much info as I fee comfortable since it would be pretty easy to identify by the city and uniquity. It isn't for sale at this time but I don't want to start anything or affect the value when it is sold. The owner (dealer) should decide how he wants to do that.

Might be an impact to the condition census when it comes to market.

I've often been amazed at what one can see in even the more rinkydink, hole-in-the-wall shops, once one strikes up an acquaintance with the owner. I've befriended dealers who had real clutterbox, rummage-sale lookin' shops with only a few ho-hum, flea-market class coins in the case, but then... when the trays come outta the safe... whoa momma.

Of course when I had a tiny antique mall operation, what you saw was what I had. I've never had the capital to have really nice stuff in my cases. It would've been a bit risky in the antique mall anyway. I guess I can see now why not all dealers put their good stuff on display.
