A b&m in town - who is a rotten s.o.b. - gave me a empty type set album a couple of months ago. Now he pulls coins that come in that he thinks will look great in my album. Unfortunately I tend to agree with his opinion and have another hole plugged...
The Skidmore hotel featured a gentlemen’s lounge where men could smoke cigars, play billiards, relax and drink. The Civil War Token Journal published a reproduction of an ad for the place some years ago in one of their articles. As it is with many Civil War era "good fors" (It says that this piece could be traded for a cigar.) this is a scarce to rare token.
This rare piece makes mention of the Battle of Shiloh, but I’m not sure that is a piece that was produced during the Civil War. I would guess that fewer than ten of these of available within the hobby.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
Ground was broken on December 2, 1863 in Omaha, Nebraska for the Union Pacific Railroad.
This coin (Civil War Siege Piece) was cherrypicked in Omaha Nebraska by a young numismatist named Ryan for the sum of one dollar in a local shop. It is in the token book listed as a "Siege Piece" dated 1862, in spite of the date on the coin. It graded as XF 40 and is currently in an ANACS holder. Thanks for re posting this one, Swampboy. It has a cool history.
1863 gold dollar, 6000 struck....but considered the rarest Philadelphia mint gold dollar with maybe 100 surviving. no one know where all the rest went. I suspect overseas to pay for war materials...a lot of gold went there.
“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly."
An elderly gentleman was sitting next to me at a small town estate auction and said, " I'm not a numismatist, but I have a civil war uniform and want to place items in the pockets. How much would you bid on this lot?" He pointed out an 1853 A&R holed quarter. I said I wouldn't go more than $5. He won some copper-nickel Indian cents at $5 each and paid $10 for the seated quarter. All-in-all he seemed very pleased and he left with my congratulations.

If someone starts a thread titled, "Coins you wish you had never sold...", I'm posting this one.

I'm pretty sure it was the establishment of " boundaries " that started a civil war
On the other hand, I'm still not sure if CIVIL WAR is an oxymoron.
