Dollar Coin or Dollar Bill - Cast your Vote

ABC is conducting a poll on whether Americans would give up the dollar bill for a one dollar coin (the current small golden dollar) in order to save money off the National Debt.

Please cast your vote in this simple ABC News Poll

I think it's a fine idea as long as the money saved actually goes to knocking down our national debt. If they piss the money away on other things, not so much.

  • 0ver 1900 for the coin and 700 that want to keep the dollar, looking good so far for this to finally happen.
  • The question is skewed "to help the US save money" , most people are going to say yes regardless of what is asked to save the US money. A simple question asking would you give up the dollar bill in favour of a dollar coin would produce a more accurate outcome i think.

People hate change. Except when "change" means more prosperity for them. But once they get prosperous, well THEN they don't want change.

The change from a dollar bill to a coin for most people is a change that they just cannot accept. Dollars are light, coins are heavy. And perhaps, just maybe, there is concern that Dollars will become the new Quarters. Somebody needs to tell them that Dollars are already the new Dimes. Dimes are the new Cent. Cents are a joke. WAKE UP!

...too bad the poll isn't carried by FOX where they have an immense viewing. image

saying it and doing it are 2 different things when it comes to to government. jmo
  • Well it looks like a 4 to 1 margin so far in favor of the dollar coin. I expect the dollar coin to replace the dollar bill shortly and once these start showing up everyday in everyones pocket I begin to wonder if this will creat a collector breed of presidential dollars that goes off the charts like we saw with the statehood quarters. I'm a big fan of presidential dollar errors and I know it can only help if the dollar coin replaces the dollar bill, but to what extent is another question.

Why would they waste time on such a needless survey when the public has spoken

The issue here is, the change to coins is logical and makes economic sense. Therefore, I fear the government will not do it. Cheers, RickO

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......

The wording on that survey is absurd.

It may as well have said, "Are you willing to switch to coins as dollars to prevent us from drowning this kitten"....

As if we, as taxpayers would ever see a penny of savings from such a proposal.

Common sense dictates, if 8.3 billion dollar coins are sitting in treasury vaults from lack of demand, STOP MINTING THEM......

Yes there are some but very few. To me, the weight issues is simply an excuse that most folks feel comfortable with as a reason for not carrying the coins. If these were the size of IKE's, then I could understand. But they're not and each one weighs the same as a quarter and a cent cimbined.

the most you would regularly carry is 4.
    1 more = a paper fiver.

4 coins are not that bad.

i hope new car makers include a spot for them in the console.

Most people I tip prefer bills above $5 nowadays, which I don't mind giving so long as the service is good. Dollar coins would be a good way to remind them to work harder next time. image

I agree on both points! image

Since the higher face value for a coin is now 25c, the $1 coin will be seen as a low value coin.

    exactly.

and the one dollar bills and dueces will still overlap in circulation for several years, to allow for a gradual getting used to for the slow to adapt.

imo this will happen in my lifetime, hopefully sooner rather than later

I think we hate being in debt even more. Not that this will make the debt go away but it is a step in the right direction.
