What is a fair price for a 1909-S Indian PCGS VF-35?

I have the opportunity to buy a 1909-S Indian in PCGS VF-35 plastic for $600, would you consider that a fair price? This is just a hole filler until I find a nice MS-63/64 RD or RB coin.

As long as the coin looks really nice (no spotting or other distractions) then that seems to be in the range of fairness, give or take $50.

I think that is a very fair price. However, if you are using this as a hole filler till you find a 63/64, I would just assume wait to find that perfect coin. The price different between a VF and a 63 is less than $400. That is just my opinion.

Super common coin, despite the hype. At this point in the game, IF I liked the coin, I would pay no more than $450...

Yeah, counted as a "common coin" but I have been looking for a nice MS63/64, at a reasonable price (ie...not trying to rip someone off nor be ripped off), for over a year now and haven't found one. Same for the 1908-S. Around the same range.

For the OP....I've stopped trying the "hole fillers" on key coins as I always seem to pay a fair price for them but have a hard time selling them (either because I got a nice one and don't want to let it go or because "they are super common" and I would take a loss I don't want to take)

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

<< <i>Super common coin, despite the hype.>> I agree to a point, however finding an example with eye appeal does take some time.

  • Thanks Bochi, luckily I found a fantastic MS-64 RB PCGS which is actually almost full red at 20% back of bid. She has a sister, a twin, still available. I can inquire if your interested.

Greysheet is $560 for what it's worth. I have an NGC VF25 I could sell for that, or a PCGS G06 I could sell for $460.

Such a difficult coin though to locate with smooth, even wear and chocolate brown glossy surfaces.
I'd think if it met that criteria and you like (no, strike that. LOVE) the coin that is a fair price to pay.

Good for you. Glad I suggested you wait till you found the grade you wanted.

  • Paul, I am not sure where you are getting your pricing from but I see $575 for VF-20 bid and $685 for XF-40 bid and this is a VF-35, so I would suspect 3/4's of the next grade and price difference is $110/4 = $27.50 per 5 points, so $27.5*3 would be $82.50 + $575 = 657.50 would be VF-35 bid??

I'd recommend going for a full EF40 rather than a "slider" 35 unless you're paying just a skosh more over the generic VF20 price.

Edited to add: Primarily because it will be more difficult to find buyers willing to pay the premium for a "choice" over a "standard" VF should you decide to upgrade.

I'd actually think that 625 would be more appropriate for a 35 (splitting the difference between a 20 and a 40) - price does not increase with grade as a linear function, but rather on an exponential function.

    I generally price 25s as a 10% bump over the difference between a 20 and a 40, and 30s as a 1/3 bump of the difference between a 20 and a 40.

Wait until you find your coin. There's alwasy a bid / ask spread on everything you buy and sell.
