I bought a cheap morgan today

I picked up this coin today at my local B&M. My pictures don't show the peripheral colors very well....I thought the white streak through the hair on the forehead was pretty neat. Figured I couldn't go wrong for 30$!

  • Hi,

hard to tell from the images but it appears it may once have been cleaned? IDK, it looks more dull the the tone would account for?

Struck out of alignment just a bit.
    Nice!
I know it can't be, but sure looks like a proof, kinda, sorta.

It is not that life is short, but that you are dead for so very long.

I agree, it is struck out of alignment. It does possibly look like it could be PL, but I am no Morgan expert image Here is another set of pics with my little P&S camera backed up a bit and my lighting angle changed, still doesn't show it all off, but a little different look anyway. As for being cleaned, I don't see any hairlines with my 5 or 10x glass.

Looks like secondary toning to me, especially in the new pics. Not necessarily cleaned/damaged by a past cleaning, but it certainly looks like someone tried to improve it at one point. Maybe a dip that wasn't rinsed well enough?

$30 for a Morgan is a good buy.... too tarnished for me though. Cheers, RickO

I wonder if the coin lived in a leather wallet or purse for a long period of time. Nice coin.

My initial thought was the same as Pat's on the proof, but I realize after the second pix it might have just been photo effects. Still, a coin I'd grab all day long for $30, which is the point of your post and well-taken. We'll never know the history of the coin but I like the crust no matter how it was formed.

    Well done on the pick-up.

Not bad.....I bet it has some nice blues in that toning when you tilt it a bit.

Thanks for the kind words...I snapped one more set of pics with the coin on a bit of a tilt, which shows off some more of the colors. Some of them change depending on the direction I tilt it, but this will be my last effort! The yellow tones in the hair is pretty nifty too!

Even if the coin is not appreciated for it's eye appeal, or cost... it's got a better chance of appreciating over time both in eye appeal and in value just being left alone.
