Do your "significant others" approve of your hobby?

commacomma Posts: 1,528 ✭✭✭
This is probably something that comes up frequently, but I am just curious how your husbands/wives, girlfriends/boyfriends feel about you and coins...
My girlfriend pretty much hates it...she knows the collector's universe logo and yells at me if I'm on here, ebay, the pcgs price guide, etc...so I have to be sneaky image

My fiancé is very supportive. Of course I do coins for a living so she pretty much is stuck having to be. She even likes most of the collectors and other dealers!

It's a bit of a nerdy hobby to outsiders and with the exception of my ex spouse I've never mentioned it in grand detail to anyone I've ever dated... Or at least to the extent that I'm involved in it! image

It could always be worse as I have a friend that lives in a Longacre type ritzy neighborhood and his backyard is scattered with well over a 1 1/2 dozen trapped 1940's Ford and John Deere tractors.

Edited to add: I did find out via FB from some mutual friends that an ex GF I dated over a decade ago attended the ANA Show in Chicago this past Aug... Although I have no interest in knowing anything about her personal life, I'm a bit intrigued to what she collects image

  • My wife doesn't mind I guess cause I am spending our kids inheritance for something
that will be there for them latter and I get to enjoy it now. O Yea, I don't tell her everything
either but then do they really need to know everything?

Coin hobby, yes. Some of the others not so much. We generally have a don't ask don't tell policy. She doesn't ask what I spend on coins, I don't ask what she spends on quilting.

Not until the time comes to SELL! Then she's all gangbusters over the hobby. Good job, pat on the back, excellent husband.

Hind sight: Now if I can only figure out how to make her collected shoe wear valuable...I'd be rich beyond my belief.

some of us have the best of both worlds.
  • My Lady is totally supportive to the point if im short a few bucks on a coin i want at any given time she'll sort it out for me. She's not in the least interested in the coins other than a glance when i put it under her nose but we've kept track of what ive spent against what ive earned trading/selling and it speaks for itself.

I would say that in general mine "tolerates" it; less so when I'm in the middle of something and leave a box or two of coins around the dining room, more so when I tell her how much my latest cherrypick sold for on eBay.

All my wife wants is for me to find is "THE" coin where we can pay the house off and she can stop working. Other than that, all she knows is what a Morgan 50c piece looks like. image

yup. I told her if she didnt let me collect coins Id starting collecting murals of Charo and pasting them all over the house.
  • My wife firmly backs and endorses my coin habits. She thinks its a great idea as a long-term savings plan and a reserve storage of wealth for reasons ranging from inflation hedge to survivalist paranoia.

But, she does get on to me if I want to spend too much at once. But, we worked out an arrangement in which I take out and set aside money weekly, and about once every two or three months or so when a coin show rolls around, I have enough to get something good.

  • Your gf hates that you're on a coin web site??? Remind her of the various other alternatives the web offers up to single guys.

My gf doesn't care although she has "little girl syndrome". I have a safe in the house and she told me it kills her when she's alone here and she knows she can't get in it. Said when she was a kid her mother had a lock box and she always had to steal the key and look inside for what goodies lurked just beyond the lock.

She's seen in the safe a couple times and knows what's in there, probably more interested in whether the contents change or not or whether or not I'm hiding something!

I think the best thing my wife ever said to me in the history of our marriage was with regards to her feelings about my interest in numismatics...

One Saturday night, all I wanted to do was sit down with a glass of Scotch, and look at coins online...

When my wife comes into my office and asks me what I am doing... so I tell her.

"You are so unbelievably lame" was her response, to which I said...

"Hey! At least I am not in here looking at porn!"

Without missing a beat, my wife quipped back... "Porn would be cheaper."

My ex wife was casually supportive of my collecting when we were married- it was definately better than me being drunk in bars or gambling... when we got divorced, i offered her half of my coins, and she declined, saying that i used my own money to buy the coins, and she didn't want to take any because of that.... i couldn't imagine being with a woman who didn't support my coin habit- that type of animosity would just be DESTRUCTIVE!! image
