Show report - Utah Numis. Soc. UNS

The show is held in Sandy Utah at the Community College Extension. It is a little tough to find if you have never been there before. There are a few hotels less than a mile away for the out of town dealers.
The show is cramped with lousy 6 ft. tables. It is held Friday and Saturday. Set up starts at 8 am with the public admitted at 10.
Saw some new faces this time but would be surprised if they return.
The people started to trickle in at the opening and the numbers grew till about 1 pm. Then it got quiet. Saturday was dead. Got to do a lot of visiting though.
This is a tough market too since many folks are so tight they squeek.
Wasn't offered anything except bullion or problem key dates. Thus, didn't buy much.
Now for the good news. They had a free dealer appreciation dinner. Finally got the great caterer back and had steak, chicken, garlic potatoes, salad, rolls, drinks and dessert.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

Got quoins?

Once again... the show reports are consistently showing low turnout, low sales. Cheers, RickO

At the recent MOON show in Minneapolis, I would have to say we experienced the same situation. Low turnout with very few spending money. I heard a number of dealers saying the show was one of the slowest they can remember.

I probably should have stopped by . . but several of my favorite dealers were up in Portland and with this economy and the recent 'show reports' I just never quite made it down there.

The market seems to have really downshifted in the past few months. I suspect that the bullion run up hid the weakness in the numismatic coin market for some time.
    All glory is fleeting.

I stopped by, it was not very active Friday at around 4:00. I picked up a few of those problem key-date coins that Coulport was talking about, but not much else. There was one fantastic 1856-S/s that I though about buying, it was a high VF coin with a few minor toned-over scratches on the reverse...might certify. For the price they usually go for it was very reasonable.

BTW I usually attend the Utah shows, I rarely buy anything (except a few oddities here and there.) Most of what I see is not high quality.

When you only see two bust quarters in the whole show, and they are both hammered/drilled/cleaned and scratched...you tend to pass on them. I've seen a few more recently, but not much.
