How not to ship an expensive coin...

The dealer shall remain nameless for now, but this arrived yesterday. A plain regular white envelope from the UK, with no customs info or insurance showing. A little white envelope which should have contained a very expensive coin (which I was really looking forward to having) simply stapled to the invoice. Not closed up in any way, just the upper flap stapled to the invoice, no tape no nothing. Note that the little envelope is not sealed at all.

I'm pissed, livid, disappointed, angry, ..... ready to go out and beat some baby seals.

Needless to say no coin, there is also a small area near the envelope flap that was either slit, or damaged, or just not properly sealed which most likely allowed the coin to escape. In any event even if it had arrived there is no telling what damage it may have had after going through the UK and US postal systems. Will find out tomorrow what the dealer is going to do about it.

Is possible the coin is coming in a different package?

Happened to me the guy was trying to send on the cheap probably not declaring customs. How does it match image of the coin prior to sending?

That makes me sick - I sure hope coinkat is right.

Hm. The seller has never shipped to me using insecure packages.

I'm pretty sure the customs declaration doesn't have an impact on the postage required.

I am talking about the hassle and risk of delay at customs. I receive many envelope coin/medal shipping where seller does not declare or add a customs form on envelope - sending as letter. I see this as a consistent pattern. What the sellers do is path the coin into thin cardboard and in one case they ran a masking tape across coin surface to have it "stick".

The more I think about this, (along with robp's comment), the more I think it was just the receipt send under separate cover. Coinkat is probably right. Was there an "invoice" enclosed as well?

I agree and hope this is the case. I've received invoices from auction houses in Spain that contained original flips, with coins following shorty behind due to customs processing.

I think I recognize the writing on the envelope and that is usually the "inner holy of holies" that contains the coin. I have received great rarities from them to basic simple bits and they have never shorted packing or insurance and usu. use FedEx which dings me for another 35 dollars every time. Damn!

Jeff, just call the seller if you are like me and impatient.

I do hope it works out as I rather liked your coin....

{PS on second look I note the envelope is STAPLED to the invoice in an opened position. He, if I am right about the seller has NEVER done that with any of my numerous shipments received.
So maybe a chance since it is not quite fitting the pattern.

Coinkat wins the prize, they emailed this morning and said the coin was sent in a sperate package. This is the first time they have ever done that, what a huge relief.

Glad there was a happy ending. I heard your audible sigh of relief all the way down here in Georgia.

Hopefully the seller will pick up a hint that he scared the pants offa you this way, and future shipments bear a bit of further explanation if coin and invoice are shipped separately.

As much as I wanted to believe coinkat's possibility, the only seller who has ever sent me separate invoices and coins (except Heritage) is Northeast Numismatics. I'm sure glad it turned out all right for you Jeff, plus I remember the particular coin when you initially posted it.image
