1864-S quarter, thanks Goldeneye!

Picked this one up on ebay not too long ago, wanted to give her a proper exhibit and also give a shout out to Goldeneyenumismatics (I think he was the seller.) Thanks for the coin!

Quite a tough coin to find. I don't think it's the "transitional reverse" but I can't really tell a difference between the two varieties anyway. Any of you experts that can weigh in?

Comments welcome.

I would be surprised if you didn't see it Rich...seems like on more than one occasion I've had to wrestle coins away from you on ebay! imageimage Thanks for the compliment, I know you have some idea how hard these can be to find. As a matter of fact I don't believe you currently have one listed right now! I almost bought one from you a little while ago that was an F12, but timing was bad. It was a sweet little coin! I think it sold in two days!

Stone...thank you sir! I think you've seen many of my acquisitions, so it's nice to hear. Did you get entirely out of bust quarters?

Ricko...I'm thinkin' General Lee had this one! I will continue to believe it until someone can prove me wrong! image
  • Glad you like it!

It's a nice coin and ripe for a PCGS submission. Either AG03 or G04 is my guess.

Yeah, from the pics I was worried it would end up at an AG, but in hand it looks more like a G4. Sure the rim on the reverse is a bit weak...but the shield is something you would find on a VG. It could take a couple submissions but I think it will end up in a G4 holder.

Was this a part of your collection or is it just a coin you flipped? Just wondering because I know you bought the coin Brain Greer had that I was seriously considering. I just had a hard time with the dig by the date.

This one was a flip, but had I not already had the PCGS G6 in my collection I would have held on to it. It's just a nice, wholesome circ.

Nice coin and it is reverse A, not the transitional B.

Here is a B notice claws on left are touching each other. That is the biggest tell.

The biggest problem I have had with identifying the B reverse is that every one I've seen has had excessive wear, so I have a hard time telling if the talons are actually closer, or if they are merging due to the additional wear. Any other tells that would be easy to identify?

Wear is difficult look at this one. I think you can see it better. Also look at berries on left. We should propably continue this on the seated board and Ray will chime in. He is the authority when it comes to these.

Very clean looking for etensive wear with no real marks to speak of. That date is amazingly bold and clear given the rim definition (or lack of). You have a nice eye, did you get it from 'goldeneye'? Sorry couldn't resist.

Yes...from goldeneye...not from GoldFinger! Mr. Bond! Who is that guy anyway, he's got some money to play with that's for sure!

Lovely. Depending on the surfaces should go PCGS G-4. I sense some roughness from the picture, OTOH the color is really nice and even.

I see why you would say that, it's the pics. The surfaces really aren't rough. I'll let you guys know which way it goes.
