Why do dipped silver coins tone brown?

Excuse me, I mean russet.
I understand that the cause is improper rinsing, but why don't dippers just rinse properly? Am I missing something here?

Disclaimer: I've never dipped a coin. Don't know how.

You must neutralize the dip after rinsing in a strong mixture of baking soda (1 teaspoon full) in a cereal bowl full of water . Swish it around, let it soak a few minutes and rerinse.

And the rinse should be first alcohol and then DI water.... copious use of water in the final bath.... Cheers, RickO
