Those are nice Engelhard pickups, especially if you did not have to pay too much above spot. That style shows up on Ebay at least once a month and goes say about spot + $10 per ounce or better. The chronology of Engelhard poured styles is sketchy but I'd venture that the style you purchased is mid-range, not the earliest or the latest.

The Drovers Country and the "Paul 'Bear' Bryant" silver art bars are the standouts here IMO. The "Drovers Country" silver art bar was minted by Switzerland. There are two mintage years of the Switzerland Drovers Country art bars that were produced. One was minted in 1973 and one was minted in 1974. The one that you purchased is the 1974 version of the Drovers Country art bar and the 1974 version is the rarer of the 2 "Drovers Country" types. This 1974 has a much higher rarity value and is much harder to find than the more common 1973 one does. Great job on this art bar find. image

The "Paul 'Bear' Bryant" silver art bar was minted in 1983 by the Madison Mint and that is a very good find. There are two reverse types of this 1983 Madison Mint bar. One reverse type of this bar is the "Madison Mint" logo (such as the one in the photo). The other reverse type of this "Paul Bear Bryant" bar is a quote from Paul Bear Bryant and part of that quote says".........The price of victory is high but so are the rewards". These currently sell for between $45 to $60 on ebay based on past auctions that I have seen on ebay. Congrats on this art bar find. image

If I had to choose, then the 1974 Drovers Country silver art bar is the better find of the two IMO. Congrats

And then today I found this beauty at an estate sale for 2 whole dollars. I new it was a good buy even for sterling but didn't know of the Tiffany premium until I got home image

Thank you for that and I try my best to contribute here. When you have a strong desire pursuing a certain hobby, then it just keeps you going. There are several ways that I have obtained (and still obtaining) knowledge and experience about collecting silver art bars and they are:

1.) I look at my Archie Kidd Silver and other art bar guidebooks - These Archie Kidd guidebooks list the silver art bars that came out, when they were minted, and how many were minted. Most of these guidebooks (except for the 2009 version) have illustrations you can look at. That is how I learned more about the various rare art bars such as Greathouse, Green Country Mint, and The Mint. I have the 4th edition Archie Kidd silver art bar guidebook (published in 1986) and I use that as my main reference to identify a silver art bar. I do not have the 5th edition but the Archie Kidd 5th edition (published in 1991) is probably the best one for silver art bars that were minted in the 1970's and 1980's. The Archie Kidd silver art bar guidebooks are the "Red Book" for silver art bar collectors. The 2009 Archie Kidd/IASAC guidebook is the most up to-date guidebook but I do not use it that much because there are no illustrations in it. I also have a 2nd edition Coca-Cola guidebook titled "Coca-Cola Bottler's 75th Anniversary Ingot and Round Guide Book 1975 to 1988" (published in January 2009) that has information about the various Coca-Cola art bars that came out in the 1970's and 1980's as well as the history of the World Wide Mint. This Coca-Cola guidebook was written by Tom Mock and has been very helpful to me when it comes to Coca-Cola silver art bars. In late 2010, The guidebooks have helped me put together and complete my silver art bar wish list of silver art bars that I am looking for to add to my collection.

2.) I met and communicated with other silver art bar collectors online and in person - During the 3 years that I have been seriously collecting silver art bars, I have met other silver art bar bar collectors that are more experienced and more knowledgeable about silver art bars than I am and I have learned some things from them that pertain to my silver art bar hobby. I have met with other silver art bar collectors when I go to various coin shows and we talk about silver art bars and I try to pick up any information from them. For example, I have read OPA's posts on this forum pertaining to silver art bars and OPA's posts have been very helpful to me because there are some silver art bars that I never heard of. Posting about silver art bars on this forum and other gold and silver internet forums and collector-oriented internet forums have helped me a lot over the years. I am also a member of IASAC (International Association of Silver Art Collectors) and have been a member of IASAC for 2 years. Being a member of IASAC has helped me obtain silver art bar knowledge because they produce a publication called the Silver Bugle. Whenever I get the Silver Bugle, I will read it and see what other silver art bar collectors have written and learn from that.

3.) I go on ebay everyday to observe winning bid prices on certain silver art bars - Even though I do not have any plans to sell any art bars on ebay, it does not hurt to go on ebay to get an idea of what the "real world" value of certain silver art bars are. The ebay marketplace is IMO the closest thing that we have to observe demand and to get a "true value" of a silver art bar especially ones that are hard to find locally. Observing winning bids on certain silver art bars makes me a better collector because this give me a very good "real world" idea of what certain ones are worth and based on those observations, I can come to some conclusions about them. Lately, I have not bid on silver art bars that much but every once in a while I will see one that comes up for auction and if it is on my wish list and the starting bid is reasonable and I have enough cash, then I will put it on my watch list and bid on it later. The last time that I bought one on ebay was sometime in July 2011.

4.) My personal experience and observations - Each year that I collect, I pick up some knowledge and observations. In this year alone so far, I have gone to almost 20 coin shows in 3 states finding and buying silver art bars and during each of those trips, I pay attention to what the dealers at the coin shows price their silver art bars. They usually treat silver art bars as .999 generic silver and I will come out buying a rare silver art bar for .999 generic silver premium instead of the ebay collector's premium. I have seen many silver art bars at various coin shows and I pay attention to what type of silver art bars that I see and what they are priced at. I have talked to some dealers about the metals market in general and I have also talked to other dealers who are also silver art bar collectors. I have made countless number of trips to local area dealers looking for silver art bars and in addition to buying silver art bar from these local area dealers, I have also paid attention to pricing and the amount of common-minted silver art bars that I see each time that I make a trip to the local dealer. I have a silver art bar journal (a regular NotePad text file) that I use to write down those experiences and observations as well as other things that pertain to the silver art bar hobby. My silver art bar journal is offline and I started this silver art bar journal in May 2011 and the first few journal entries have been of past experiences and of past silver art bar purchases that have significance to me. The most recent journal entries have been just trips to the coin dealers, coin shows, what I bought and what that purchase meant to me and what I like about that particular purchase. I am more detailed in my silver art bar journal in that I talk and express more about the experience and the atmosphere surrounding the silver art bar purchase that I made. I like writing in my silver art bar journal because it gives me a written timeline of what I have done and it helps to write in it because I will not remember everything and I will eventually forget certain past experiences. When I write it down, I can go back and read it.

With all of that said, I do make mistakes and I try to learn from those mistakes. I am still learning about silver art bars and I really consider myself a "student" of the silver art bar hobby. All that I am really doing is sharing information based on my past purchases and past observations that I have made regarding this hobby. It is my love of silver art bars that gives me the drive to collect silver art bars and I enjoy what I do. It is also that same love of silver art bars that give me the drive to write about it on this and other various gold and silver internet forums. It makes me feel good and if I find a rare silver art bar for a low premium, then that makes me feel great. I love looking at/fondling some of my silver art bars. This hobby has changed me as a person in ways that I never expected.

1970SilverArt...you should really consider publishing your own guidebook to extend proiftability of your knowledge. I mean that in the most sincere way. You are "the man" on this subject imo. I'm sure there are some others here that may even know more, but you have a way of communicating your knowledge that makes for enjoyable reading and I come away with the feeling that I actually learned something. Your hard work should be acknowledged, and I for one greatly appreciate it.

Thank you for that compliment. I truly appreciate that. image

I do my best and that is all I can do. However, that is interesting what you said about publishing a guidebook. In addition to writing journal entries in my silver art bar journal, I also keep track of ebay winning bids of certain silver art bars since mid-2010 but it is of only a few rare silver art bars.

When Archie Kidd was alive, I do not know how he did it but that was a HUGE accomplishment in him publishing several additions of the Archie Kidd silver art bar guidebook. I have never thought of publishing a guidebook and that would be a HUGE undertaking because there are so many silver art bars out there. I still feel that I do not have enough collecting experience and I do not feel that I have enough silver art bar knowledge to write a silver art bar guidebook on my own but maybe in a few more years you never know. I will not rule out a book but we will see. I will admit that I like writing about the silver art bar hobby and I have written a lot in my silver art bar journal and on various gold and silver forums about this topic. image
