Specifically, Trade Dollars. But any coin of that era that has PL surfaces. Once they get down to the EF to AU range, they look like dogs as every single contact mark shows up significantly in the PL fields.

Lightly circulated or even heavily circulated doesn't matter... I still want a Gobrecht.
    When in doubt, don't.

Not only that, the hairlines after a dip, oh the horror!

Trade dollars are a lil too rich for my blood,

I agree, but my personal threshold is MS 62 and lower. The hairlines/contact marks/scrapes/etc that cause the 62 grade look bad on PL/semi-PL surfaces. For example, an MS 62 DMPL Morgan just does not look like a nice coin to me in general.

I agree but for a budget concious collector ms62 lower is a great opportunity, regardless of the ugly eye appeal.
  • You can find nice 62 PL and DMPL's if you look. Many are misgraded.

I think here is a perfect example of what relicsncoins is talking about. This Trade $ is now in a Pcgs AU-50 holder and looks fairly rough due to the fact that it was at one time very proof-like.

The reasons you cite are the reason why I never did much with P-L Morgan dollars when I was a dealer. The pieces I did like were usually in high grade holders with very high prices on them. The lower priced ones I bought often stayed in my case for less than one show.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Try this for a beat up, former PL/DMPL Morgan. The mirrors are still very deep on both sides, but they were so abraded that the folks across the street didn't even give it a PL designation.

Although 'hate' is a really strong word (one i usually reserve for counterfeit, copy, fantasy, and tribute 'coins')
i do know what you mean, imagine what this AU half dollar looked like right off the polished dies, before moderate spending/handling

oh well, still like it enough not to hate it

What do you mean by misgraded?
    Can you please elaborate?
Such as graded lower than actual grade due to contact marks?
Given a genuine grade or lacking pl/dmpl designation???
