  • "A possible issuer was George J. Stivers, who was listed as a designer in the 1910 Philadelphia directory. "G.J. Stivers""
"Dr. G. J. Stivers. He resided in Louisville, Jefferson Co, KY 29 June 1892, 550 Fifth St."

My small amount of research not sure if it is the same person tho, but both possible.

This is a case where some additional research on your part could increase the value of the counterstamped coin in question...sometimes greatly increase it! There are just so many counterstamped coins out there they there is only a percentage that have been properly researched. I've been able to find information on various counterstamps that I own, which really increases the desirablitiy of the coin for me, and when it comes time to sell, it also increases value for potential buyers.

The National Archives would have the federal census for each decade during and after the time frame of most of the dates of the G.J.Stivers counterstamped Coins. With the exception of the U.K. piece and the Canada 25 cent, the counterstamps are all on coins minted in Philadelphia. Perhaps that would help narrow your search to the census of Philadelphia. As mentoned previously, a George J. Stivers is listed in the 1910 Philadelphia City Directory.

With the exception of the 1890 census, which (for the most part) burned in a fire in the Commerce Department building in 1921. Interestingly, this is one of the more "important" or well-known censuses because it spurned Frederick Jackson Turner to write his famous "closing of the frontier" essay in 1893. Furthermore, it was the burning of the 1890 census that gave credence to the believe that that US should have a National Archives. So, while the 1890 census isn't in the Archives, we may not have an Archives without them!
