True or False:

Do they use only denominations of 5 cents or greater? (the harm part is off the table)

Since the 1980s, the U.S. military has done without the penny on its bases, rounding out transactions to the nearest nickel with no noticeable harm.

True. They were also using dollar coins and $2's in the past but I don't think so now. Over in Iraq and Afghanistan they use pogs for coins, and the lowest denomination is 5 cents.

No... in the States they still use cents. In the AOR they use AAFES POGS in the denominations of 5c, 10c and 25c.

No the question is false- they use Lincolns like any other piece of coinage. There is no rounding up or down.

In the 1950's we were paid by MPCs in Europe. MPC stands for Military Pay Certificates and the smallest was 5 cents and the largest 10 Dollars.

False. I was in the Post Exchange on Fort Detrick, MD today and they still use the "cent."

    Partially true.

At AAFES in Europe, they did not use cents. There was no harm done.

You think they are costly to produce, try adding the cost of shipping them to Europe.

As for "PX" (Army Term) prices, they are OK and will price match, plus no sales tax. I can often get what I am looking for cheaper off base (or have them price match if worth driving 15 miles for it...)

    I disapprove strongly.

If the economy has to be saddled with pennies then the military should have to use them as well.

They don't use coin in a combat zone anyway so there is no justification for not making the PROPER change.

I still end up with a few cents every time I come back from the Exchange so I say False.

  • No pennies used by the AAFES or Marine Corps Exchanges in Japan. Everything rounds to zero or five. Nobody cares. However if you use plastic (debit or credit) you get billed to the penny.

The rest of the world should do this.

In my experience the military uses the cent coin within the states. Overseas they don't use it. My first experience with this was at RAF Chicksands in England in 1973. Prices are in odd cent amounts and only the total gets rounded up or down. It cost too much to ship over the amount of cents that would be required in every day commerce.

When I was attending training at Keesler AFB, Mississippi in the early 70's we normally got paid by a check in our mailbox. One pay day we had to go through a payline and they paid us in cash (this was the Air Force). We had to take $5 of our pay in Ike dollars so they handed out a whole lot of Ike's that day. It also wasn't unusual for them to call a pay line and pay us partially in $2s and Ikes none of which were welcome off base (or on base for that matter). My first stop was always at the bank to deposit that stuff in my savings account.

Though out my career of 23 years of which 15 years was overseas I never did see the cent coin in commerce. So, yes they round things up or down but only on the total of your transaction, not on each item.
  • All my base time for the most part was overseas and I never remember cents from 2002-2007, I don't remember any 1c pogs, 5c yes.

when an article presents untruths as facts, I generally just dismiss the entire article...like I just did for the one linked.

My service time was considerably before that..... cents were common on all bases and ships. Heck, at that time, one could still get a draught beer for a nickel.... image Cheers, RickO
