What do you make of this $20G?

lkeigwinlkeigwin Posts: 16,892 ✭✭✭✭✭
Opinions? It's not mine and I'm not interested in buying it. It looks suspicious to me. Is that putty?

It's in an old PCGS holder, FWIW, and being offered for sale.

I'm not the putty expert here, but I'd say YES.

A lot of scratches and hits is all I see and a spot in the left field. It's in a PCGS holder so it's OK.

    What grade is it?

It's a 60, Jon. Does the lighter color, smooth surface concern you?

  • Me not likey. There's something that doesn't appear quite kosher about the coin, at least in that picture.

No, but I don't know Gold and trust PCGS. I would not buy Gold raw or in another holder other than PCGS.

It looked like a low grade unc to me...so 60 sounds right to me. The coin doesn't do much for me, but I would think it's real and OK being in a PCGS holder.

I think there was a thread a while ago that was talking about how there are a lot of puttied gold coins in PCGS holders.

Look fine to me. The recessed areas are protected and retain their original mint frost and luster while the higher areas are unprotected and have lost their frost/luster due to rubbing and scuffing from handling. Hence, the MS60 grade.

    You mean this one? image

It looks like a 60/61 coin to me. I do not see any evidence of putty in the photo, but that does not mean that it is not there.

I don't think a coin with this much wear would be a good candidate for a putty job which is usually performed on higher graded coins to hide hairline scratches.

I agree totally. Just a typical well scuffed up unc $20 Lib. And at this price level there's no reason to go for the putty can as there is no real price advantage to a 61 or 62.
And you would need a gallon of putty to make this into a 64. Would say it has orig surfaces as well.

I think this coin got hit with the ugly stick, but that stick didn't have any putty on it.

Nice copper spot and not much of a premium for that one.

Alan, I don't see anything wrong in my statement at all. I do trust PCGS and said like most others that it's OK. It's not a coin I would buy unless it was a really hard to find dime and/or dime variety. Too scuffy and I don't like the carbon spot. But the coin is what it is!image

I see a coppery luster below the contact surfaces.

I dont see any putty. Putty would cover up all of those blemishes. If someone actually did putty the coin, they did a lousy job!

I do not see evidence of putty in the picture.... In hand, there are ways to detect putty... Cheers, RickO

Why would you even consider a coin you thought has problems?? DO NOT buy it. Wait for one you like.
