It's real, but to say it's a problem coin is an understatement.

If you are a new collector who is intent on buying raw type coins on ebay you are basically begging to get taken. Good luck.

If auctions like that attract you there's no telling how much fun you'll have on fleabay.

Best of luck.

There's no good way to agree on a value for a problem coin because different people value the problems differently.

Don't buy raw coins on eBay.
I like large size currency and silver dollars.

Do yourself a favor-save your money for a nicer coin-you will be glad you did. It looks real from here BUT-I cannot tell if it is real or not from the photos-1799 is a much counterfeited date for bust dollars. Bob

It is probably genuine.
It is definitely ugly.
If you ever want to get a nicer one, you will look a significant amount selling this one. Better to apply the money you might have spent on this one to a nicer one.

I'm not sure if you get the jist of the well-wishing... i don't think they are wishing you good luck, as much as good luck while you get screwed over and lose a lot of money... without knowledge and experience, you are stepping into a land mine area....

This 1799 piece has nice detail, but it is so scratched up!! save your money for problem free coins!!

Yeah I know what he was saying I was just trying not to be rude. I know the coin was ugly and I was gonna low ball him once I knew it was real. I did quite a bit of research before I asked for opinions as well. Thanks to all. p. s. Its kinda hard to ask for help here when half the people make it out to be like just cause you ask for help, are new here, and are looking on Ebay you must be an idiot.

Hang in there and keep learning. Remember all the folks giving you advice probably made similar, or worse mistakes early on.
My advice, for building a type set with a limited budget and limited experience, would be to focus on the easier, cheaper coins first,
where counterfeiting, etc. is rare, and nice upper circ coins are available. Seated dimes, quarters, halves, Barber coins, the 2 cent/3 cent
pieces, etc. in nice original VF/XF coins are wonderful to own and readily acquired while you learn more about the hobby in general.
A sincere 'good luck' to you!

Probably genuine, definitely ugly and definitely not worth $999.00.

The 1799 silver dollar is the most common date in the series.

I would not buy that coin, and like the others said buying raw coins on eBay, especially expensive raw coins, is a high risk move.

Another reason to stay away from that auction is all the GIANT RED SHOUTING BS.

Anyway, I did a search of Heritage's archives for bust dollars in VG10. Something like this lot you would really enjoy looking at and having in your collection. You'd have absolutely no problem selling it in the future if you wanted to upgrade. The trashed coin on eBay will be a coin you won't like and will have a hard time selling for anything other than a steep discount to someone else who really won't enjoy it.

Spend time looking at these at shows and in auctions before you pull the trigger and you'll be happy with your purchase.

That looks like a coin you might dig up after finding it with a metal detector. As such, it would be great to own because you found it, but not so great if you have to buy it. Sometimes it's all about the journey. image

You will get the best deals by far on ebay, BUT you have to know exactly WHAT you are buying.

I have built a great collection with 98% of the coins coming from ebay.

Yes, that is a nice coin for the grade and well worth the extra $266.00.

hey thanks again for everybody else's advice, it made me feel way more comfortable posting here. I already have some of the easier type coins and wanted to finish getting the dollar types, but your right I should not rush it. I just been dieing to buy something lately.

Yes, and buy a PCGS Bust dollar with a grade on it, not one marked "Genuine." This coin, while it comes with an interesting story, is not likely to be a financial winner for the new owner.
