OK I guess I was exaggerating but I but this coin sells for not much more that $800, which to me seems like a steal. Most gold commems seem to have very low premiums is all im saying.

i don't know...i'd say it's pretty high. the gold value is only $78. the rest is all numismatic. i'd say it's a pretty good premium considering you can get a rare pre-civil war gold dollar for less.
There are 1633 PCGS coins in this grade, and about 2000 in higher grades, not including all the NGC coins, so to my mind gold commems are still overpriced after some very aggressive price manipulation by a large dealer a few years ago.
How many collectors could be trying to complete the small but very attractive series they represent...probably not more than a few hundred at most.
Yea, I've got one. It's a PCGS MS-64. The coin has a hairline scratch though the face that you can only see with a 10X.
This coin is part of a complete set of the five coins. They all grade MS-64 except for the $2.50 which is an MS-66. I had to go that high to find one that I liked. Since that is not a huge difference between MS-65 and 66 for the quarter eagle, it looked like a good deal. The quarter eagle comes with dull finish, and many of the lower grade ones are not that attractive.
Maybe if the dollar really is a drug on the market, I should look to upgrade it if the price is cheap enough.
There are a number of dealers out there who view the old commemorative gold coins as "financial poison;" they don’t really want to handle them.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
Yes, I bought them are the FUN in Tampa. I didn't go in with the idea of buying both, but this is ONE coin that I really wanted with CAC stickers because of the putty problems. Then the NGC one with a CAC sticker kind of bit me in the leg since it was priced at Gray Sheet numbers ... I figured I'd be kicking myself if I passed. Maybe I'll end up kicking myself because I didn't pass.
