Of course yes. I'd say a year or even two years is a fair interval for patient collectors. For some goals, five years or more is reasonable, because the coins cost so much money, and for some, so rarely come up for sale (eg: recent thread about rare Southern gold). One month might qualify for "flitter-bug" status in some numismatic specialties because serious collector coins rarely come up for sale at any where near an approachable price. Patience is a virtue, unless a person is collecting relatively common coins. Admittedly, most collectors fit in that boat, but a few do not. To say those few are not coin collectors because they are patient and picky and tend to buy expensive coins, is not something I would do.

Well if the opposite is a collector then i'm the real deal. Why just last night the smarter half found my money order receipts from the last month+, it wasnt pretty here at home last night.
  • I haven't purchased a coin in months! But I've added many coins to my collection from circulation pulls! So as long as your collecting coins, whether buying them or not, you're a collector!image Hmmmm I suppose you could call someone who collects change in a jar a "coin collector"?? Just a different form of "collecting".

There is a part of me that is impressed by the collectors that have one clear focus, and wait for months to purchase that one amazing 5 figure coin.... and then can lurk in the shadows for weeks and weeks afterwards. I'm way too middle class for that, and i have way too many collections i'm working on. But waiting for quality to show is SUCH an important quality for a collector to learn! When i don't find something that really sings to me, i just end up buying silver... image

  • At this point in the primary set I'm working on, I'm trying to bang one out every couple weeks or so. I need to sell some dupes, though...

Nay... i can't afford to be a gold bug, so i am happy to be a silver bug... i have a big "birth year" collection for myself (1970), and there is a TON of silver issues from around the world for that year... and i love the feeling (from the rim) of beautiful proof 900 or 925 silver.... silver is an awesome metal! image

  • The collecting bug just ain't biting me at the moment. I just don't have a desire to buy anything. Lately I haven't even been looking at sites to buy anything. Someone send me some Zoloft quickly.

No Job No Money No coins...... Did get a 64 type B quarter from dimtorts free to complete my set. And Modcrewman's giveaway picked up a 66+ superbird. Without this board it would be over 6 months without a purchase. Enjoy image Will always be a collector even when I cannot afford to be.image

You are still a collector, even without recent purchases. Collectors read forums, peruse coin books, enjoy their collections, go to coin shows. A purchase is not the only criteria of a collector. Cheers, RickO
  • I've been buying junk silver halves but if we are talking actual collector's items, I'm saving up my pennies for a very special coin I need for my collection and haven't bought a collector coin in a couple of months.
  • EagleguyEagleguy Posts: 2,264 ✭✭✭✭✭
If I don't buy a coin in a month I start getting antsy. As Ricko stated, I try to distract myself with other coin-related activities such as reading, cataloging, and photography.

The term "collector" describes what one IS, not necessarily what one DOES.

Is it sad that the first thing I noticed on that coin was the minor clipped planchet? image

Incomplete planchets wanted, especially Lincoln Cents & type coins.

Well, that was the third thing I noticedimage
First was the coin, then the toning along with it being stuck very well.
Thirdly was the very cool clipimage

I sometimes go many months without finding a coin I want/need, but I'm still a collector.
  • 66Tbird66Tbird Posts: 2,858 ✭✭✭
Been selling for months, not buying, and gearing up for the next ASE Anni flip. Then I'll do something for the type set. Not much left really for that, that's in my range anyways. Maybe I'll pair down and do my first five figure coin.
Need something designed and 3D printed?
  • Waiting to buy coins has nothing to do with price. Try finding certain PL Morgans. You just cant find them. When you do the prices are reasonable though. Or certain early RB Lincolns.

I don't think you ever get out of the collector status as long as you still have enthusiasm in your collection. For me, sometimes 30 days just isn't enough time to save for something I want. image

I agree!! Silver gives me the way out when I just gotta buy something! As long as I am filling in blanks in a collection, I am a collector. I'm too poor to be considered an investor.

My most recent purchase was July 2010, an 1803 half dime. I'm in the market for a couple pre-1808 coins but it may take a while to find the right ones.
