Apparently, that was a Bumstead type (with scrolls).

I have not been able to attribute the engraving to any particular event.

The price seems like a steal in 2004 for the life saving medal. However, it should not be considered a Lesher variety in my opinion. It was obviously used for a different purpose than intended by someone else.
Interestingly though, it was done in the same year of issue. 1900

I put in the category of a "love token", done on a privately-minted token instead of a US legal-tender coin.

Here is the only Lesher Dollar I have. It's nothing fancy like the previous ones. I purchased it because its connection to the free silver movement.

If you go shopping for one of these, be carful when it comes to the edges. I saw a couple certified pieces that had edge bumps that had been filed off with no mention of that on the holder. These pieces are expensive, so it's good to observant.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Just an observation on the Life Saving medal:

I don't think it says, "For Yen."
Rather, "For Ben" (or "Den") seems more likely. I mean, what the heck is Yen? Japanese money? :D
