cleaning silver finds

Is it wise to use acetone on silver coins found while detecting to remove the soil?
If not, what is the best way to clean so as not to destroy any potential value?

Thanks.

I usually start off rinsing with water to remove the loose dirt. Then use some soap to work on the more caked on stuff. If you wanted to use some acetone after that, it shouldn't hurt, but the majority of the time, soap and water does the trick.

Acetone will not hurt coins... it removes organic material.... Cheers, RickO
  • Olive oil and salt. Rub the salt between your fingers and the coin. The salt is not too abrasive to cause major scratches.
