He was always a really nice
and caring person on the boards
and he always seemed to add a
lot to the conversation. He was also
working on one heck of a type set
    if I recall.

Bear is such a nice guy and I'm sorry he's ill. I've teased him mercilessly over his posting style (how he double-spaces remains a complete mystery) to me, but he's kind spirited and an asset to the hobby.

I never had the pleasure of interacting with him.

He passed very soon after I joined here.

But, he was one of the most admired and revered members from all indications.

A true legend. A gentleman and scholar.

    May he RIP. :'(

I recall a PM exchange between bear and myself after we met at a coin show and he "reminded" me his PCGS title has a small "b" and not a capitalized "B".
He was as detailed and specific in his everyday life as he was the coins he collected.

I remember Abe (aka Bear) fondly. We had lots of interesting conversations and PMs. I also won't forget what some well-known dealers did (or tried to do) to him during his last year. At one point, Coinsarefun posted his final set of coins, purchased for his family, on her web site. That is a set worth reviewing and possibly learning a lesson or two from.

I never knew there were issues with the coins. Sorry to hear what happened.

Anyone have a link to the specific page?

There were issues with some coins that he purchased. What is on her website does not include those coins.

Ah, the old days of Coinalot. I wonder if Clankeye will ever post again?

I think the lesson many of us learned was how “investing” in coins for one’s heirs has pitfalls ,

Per my calculations, approximately $221,000.00 was spent on the linked coins. If that money had been put into, say, VTSAX on 7/18/2011, it would be $662,403.00 today.

No way coins touch that. Do not invest in coins.

The days of Coinalot was a special time on the forum. Bear had a way of bringing members and forum history into a great story. Fun times that gave us something to laugh at. I don't see that much any more.
I remember bear as a really kind man that loved this hobby.

I thought Bear passed away a few years ago but I hope I am wrong on that.

Certainly agree, but however misguided his purpose, it did bring him joy during his final days.

Were his coins auctioned within a couple years of bear’s passing ?

I think he sold most of them when he got sick and did not have much left. He wanted to make sure his wife was taken care of when he died.

I was lucky enough to win one of his coins at auction when they were dispersed. The Oregon is one that will always stay with me. bear was a kind soul. Perhaps making a legacy collection was a financial mistake, but collecting brought him joy, as it does for many of us.
