==> the consignor told me he owned the box since the early 1980s...he seems like a very rock solid guy...
I'm no steve hart , but I've been a dealer since 1981 and have a pretty good sense on these things plus I used to own a large collection of unopened myself...
I inspected the packs and I would say they are unsearched...
we would refund if steve hart said otherwise...
    hope this info helps...

    Morning,

Could somebody please explain the math for me on this one ? I just don't get it, we have a Rack that is bogus to begin with, with a re-packaged Mantle that IMHO is NOT a 5 (look at the Stains at the top, the corner rounding and just general overall wear), so is a VG-EX 4 at best, somewhere around $225-$250 value if generous, and another couple dozen Grade 4-6 Common Cards, total maybe $100 bucks being generous again, and we are up to all of about $350 and the bidding is at $765. Why can't these idiots Bid on my Crap !!!

Did White backs come in the same packs as Gray backs in 1956? Also I love the marketing ploy on this auction. 50/50 centering on a card that is trimmed...Shouldnt it be more like 45/45?
    45/45 Mantle Authentic

  • << <i>Did White backs come in the same packs as Gray backs in 1956? >>

Good question, and the answer should be obvious, common sense tells you they didn't use two different paper stocks during the same print run at the factory, once again, just one more RED FLAG about how bogus these are !!!

  • I would also bet on paper loss or markings on the back of that Mantle. This is no slight against Probstein, just the person who assembled that pack.
  • bobbyw8469bobbyw8469 Posts: 7,139 ✭✭✭
Neil, I totally get what you are saying. I am guessing it is the same deal as to why all those raw card sellers get at least a 2 grade "higher than what they actually are" premium on their raw cards.
  • mrmint23mrmint23 Posts: 2,249 ✭✭✭
Very well said BBG but doesnt a New/Used car salesman tarnish his record (even a little) when a used car is sold and it turns out to be a lemon? Nothing against Rick but is the risk worth the reward of selling questionable items?

People like seeing things behind plastic or glass ... and while one might assume anyone bidding so much for a rack would know these packs were repackaged, you know what they say when you "assume".

Also, people like the potential of value ... since the Mantle isn't graded a bidder might imagine it COULD be anything from a 4 to a 7 ... even though it's quite clear it's a 5 at best.

People are nuts, and Probstein has a solid reputation, so that just fuels the crazy bidder fires image >>

  • jeffcbayjeffcbay Posts: 8,950 ✭✭✭✭
I don't think BBCE sells on consignment.

As for Probstein123, he listed that rack pack very accurately, and shouldn't feel guilty at all for selling it. He thoroughly described it as it actually is. Nothing wrong with that.

I suppose the 4th series is sort of lack-luster in its potential finds. That would be the series with McCovey and some highlight or leader cards? Would the packs contain only cards from that series?
  • grote15grote15 Posts: 29,754 ✭✭✭✭✭
4th series is least desirable series in 1973 as far as star power goes, but there are some low popcommons for registry fans.

Those Christmas racks are like catnip to the casual pack collector for some reason. Makes no sense to pay so much for mid grade cards. I saw a Youtube video of a collector busting open a few Christmas racks. He grabbed a pair of scissors and hacked them up like he's Leatherface. LOL. Where do these people come from? I think it's the same people who pay over PSA 9 prices for a raw card on eBay.

This isn't meant to take anything away from your auction. It's just an amusing observation about what sells on eBay.
