is it REALLY a "sin" to throw out commons?

my current focus has me ripping wax looking for gem copies of needed Brett's and Schmidt's.

that being said, i have some rack cases sitting here (don't sweat it, im talking 1986 topps to 1990 Donruss image that i intend on opening looking for star power showing on them, and maybe open some if i need the Brett/Schmidt. for those sets that i do not need them, im thinking of just tossing out the racks, and not even bothering with the singles.

i also have some wax to rip (think 1991 Donruss, 1992 Donruss, 1993 Studio and the like) that is cheap, and fun to rip.
Once im done with the rippage, i dont have the room to keep the singles.

i know people say to donate them for a good cause, but these things are decades old. will they really be missed?

I busted a 1987 donruss case the other month and only kept the top 5 key cards(multi of each though) and threw out the rest in the trash. So I feel you on this. Some of this stuff just doesnt interest me and space is limited.
  • No but will make a little kids day. You can also drop off at a childrens hospital. Those are better alternatives than the trash. I go through the same feeling, but end up saving them for someone else's pleasure. There's The Boy's Club, Big Brother programs, and a bunch more.

    Have fun with the rips!!

I recently broke down and busted open a few 1986 Fleer Baseball sets and an 89 Fleer and tossed the commons.

    Hey Eric,

Come on over this weekend and we'll flip'em. When we get bored, we can go get Doug and scale the cards like the old days. image

Or else drink a whole lot of beer, line the cans up against the wall and scale the cards into the cans. Whoever makes the biggest dent wins!

    the sin would be...

dropping off a case load of 1987 donruss and having a kid search high and low for a Bonds, Mcgwire, Ripken etc...

not finding one and then being upset...

  • Yes I agree. That's why you take what would be your dollar box if set up at a show, and put those star cards all throughout the commons. That way a kid gets to have some great pulls in their eyes. Pulling their favorite players is important if you go that route.

I've been asking myself the same question. I have boxes & boxes of 87 through 91. I need the space but I just can't seem to
    chunk them in the garbage.

Did anyone else read the comments with the video? People actually think they are worth something & seem pretty emotional
    that someone would burn them.

Bottom line is donate them to kids baseball. I asked here on the board for some donations a while back and said I would pay the shipping and not one member asked for the shipping money, they just sent cards that I have still been giving out to my players and i would have gladly paid the shipping cost. Someone recently donated a unopened case of 1988 Donruss packs. I gave kids some packs, made a couple of sets to give as awards to my players, and will give out the singles by the handfuls. Drop them off locally to a boys club, the YMCA, or the local baseball league if you dont want to mess with shipping them but don't burn them or throw them out unless they are molded or somehow ruined. jmho

I thought about doing what everyone else on craigslist does, and act like I have no idea what I'm talking about a try to sell a box of 1000 cards for $20. It could happen, shyah!
  • I would buy all of your Braves cards. I'm always looking for upgrades in my raw team sets. If you were to seperate certain teams out as you bust, you'll be able to move the team lots fairly easy here.

    Bury them

Take a huge amount, box them up, double wrap them in a garbage bag, dig a 4-5 foot hole --- cover

Just think what the look on the face of the person that finds them in 100+ years

    Just a thought

Give them to kids, either at a school or hospital. Just make sure you somewhat organize the cards in X-count boxes (ie 2,400 count shoebox). If you toss cards in a moving box, they may assume you're unloading junk/trash onto them.

    Perception is key...
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
  • Put them in team bags 15-20 cards per and give them out at Halloween, i have done this many years and young kids love it! image
