1997 Mint Release of Morgan Dollars - GSA Sale Rejects

Just found the other half of the 1997 Mint release Morgan option. Added it here:

And here's the original single option reported a few weeks ago:

I vaguely recall buying these from the Mint some years back. I've read that only 321 of these were offered for sale. Apparently they were the ones nobody wanted from the last GSA sale featuring coins from the San Francisco mint's vaults. Any info any of you have about these would be greatly appreciated.

  • During the 90's I was working 2 jobs & when I thought about it I'd buy a bunch of stuff from the Mint, open it, look at it for a second, then pack it into a box & stash it in a closet. I've been finding lots of stuff I completely forgot about. So far, though, my best finds are 2 Kennedy Collector's Sets and a 4 coin Smithsonian Anniversary Set in a cherry wood box. image

A bit ugly, yeah, but in a cool-ugly sorta way. I don't hate it.

Nah. Stick with your lightning. Everybody's got Morgan dollar avatars, both ugly and otherwise.

  • I'm tired of the lightning bolt, although it does go well with San Diego.

    Here are the choices:

Looks like a textbook MS60. Cool that the mint packaged up a few coins to sell this way, though.

  • I did find a reference to these on another forum where a member indicated they were part of a display at the old San Francisco mint, and when the mint was closed down the display was dismantled and these 321 coins were offered for sale to those on the U.S. Mint's mailing list.

I have a one coin box and a 2 coin set that i purchased in '97. On the COA it is stated that these came from the S.F mint ,as a collection stored in the vaults. But as I recall they were advertised as being on display at the mint not being stored. And of course I took a gamble and recived a 1885-O in the 1 coin box and in the 2 coin boxis a 1921 plain and a 1922 Peace Dollar, but this 321 number I don't recall.

  • A guy on another forum seemed to know a bit about these. I couldn't say where he got his info. From what I've been
able to gather, they sat in the SF vaults for decades before the GSA sales of the 70's. These few were the leftovers
that no one wanted. They were part of a display that was eventually dismantled after the SF mint closed. These 321
are historic because they were the last of the Morgans sold. There are no more left in any of the Mint vaults. That' it.
All gone. So these came from the very last sale. As far as their worth is concerned, it's like anything else. Value is
determined by scarcity and demand. And demand is determined by desirability, which is always in the eyes of the
beholder. And advertising helps, too. image

Paladin - are we sure there are none in ANY government vaults? You know the gov there might be more in the corner of a room that has not seen light in 40 years waiting to be discovered - or at least that is the numismatic fantasy in my head right now; it sure would be exciting huh?! image

These were the non-CC dollars deemed "circulated" due to bagmarks or toning that people bought for $3 and then RETURNED them as being ugly.

I'll take all the "ugly" Morgans you want to give me for $3 please!

I suppose one can always dream, but I have it on very good authority that these really were the last batch left in the
Mint's vaults. Although sometimes I am reminded of I believe the last scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark. The one
showing a gov'mint warehouse with seemingly endless rows of crates stacked floor to ceiling. Who really knows? image
