Is this a good time to sell 2008 Gold Buffalo's...

or not? Don't need the money, just thinking this could be a good time with gold prices (and of course limited mintage). Would appreciate some opinions....thanks!

I don't believe these issues have been helped in any meaningful manner by the rise in bullion prices. In fact, it likely takes less generic gold bullion today to purchase these issues than it did one or two years ago. If you believe these issues are maxed out in terms of price or you want to move the funds somewhere else then that is one thing, but if you believe these issues will crash in price when there is a dip in bullion value then that is another. I tend to think they would hold their value well with a decline in bullion value and that they will continue to resist being influenced by rising bullion prices when compared to other gold products.

I assume you mean the fractional set.

they peaked sometime ago and prices have pulled back markedly despite the increasing gold prices.

Yup, after giving it more thought I think your right that bullion prices will not affect the price of these. Think I will hang on to them....thanks for your opinion!

Yes, the 1/10 and 1/4 oz. fractionals. I have not paid attention to coin prices for some time, so was not aware they peaked and dropped markedly. Thanks for letting me know this....think I will hang on for better times.

There are some choices on what to replace them with that could see much higher return while these have leveled out. Upcoming silver sets are a good example. You can't go wrong cashing in on today's hot collector item while it's high and buying tomorrow's collector item while its low.

If these coins follow the usual pattern for many modern issues, they may have peaked in price. The trouble is for many collectors it's a matter of "out of sight, out of mind." Once the initial flurry is over, many modern coins settle back into a permanent state of financial repose. Generally prices drift lower although in some instances the market has been known to collapse.

I don’t see a collapse in the price of the 2008 buffalo coins, but I can see drift. Despite the fact that gold bullion is at all time highs, that has not translated to many items with a high collector component in their price.

If you think that you have ridden the buffalo gold set horse to the top of the market, and no longer have an interest in them as a collector, then perhaps it is time to sell. But if you think that it will continue to be viable investment item with price increases in its future, then you would do well to hold them.

On a personal note I wish that I had bought one of these sets as a collector. Sure money is nice, but I thought that the four piece set in the original mint boxes was an attractive item. The trouble was the mint wanted WAY over melt. Now I think that the current prices are ALL the money and then some. Further complicating the issue is that I would want the coins in the original mint box NOT certified. Sets like that are true rarities today

I still have the original Mint packaging and can always crack the coin out....but for now, I think the certified plastic speaks for itself!!!

For me it’s a matter of esthetics. I really like the appearance of the original government packaging and really have no collector interest in the slabbed coins at all. That is my general opinion of modern certified coins. I have a number of “regular” Proof for my registry type set, but that’s it.
