How many folks actually find mint errors/rare coins in pocket change?

jessewvujessewvu Posts: 5,087 ✭✭✭✭✭
I found a 1998 wide AM in my pocket change the other day, in MS condition. I put it in my wallet so I could put it under the Dinolite when I got home. Well, I forgot about it for a few days and when I went to check, it was gone image. I'm pretty sure it was the first neat coin I have ever found in pocket change besides silver.

How many people have actually found something, besides silver, worth something $15 or more in pocket change? Silver doesn't count image

I found a 1939 DDR die #1 Jefferson nickel in change that slabbed PCGS-XF-45, and several 1950-D Jefferson's. My biggest score was a 1995-D DDO Lincoln Die 1 in AU-58, probably worth $150 or so.

I don't remember ever finding anything in regular pocket change except for one 2000 wide am cent. All my other finds have been from searching rolls.

I found a cent with a double clip about three weeks ago. I find single clips from time to time, but this one has one large clip on the lower right, and a small clip on the upper left.

Other than a couple of blank cent planchets, no real errors in change. Have found (in the past) many older coins (V nickels, Columbian halves, commemoratives etc) in change on my paper route when a kid. Cheers, RickO

After the Connecticut State Quarters were released, this one showed up in the cash register of my company's cafeteria.

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

I found a modern (1990s) Jefferson with two clips, once. I guess that's probably worth more than $15. They weren't enormous clips, but they were noticeable. More than just a little bit of missing rim.

Oh, yeah- back not long after they came out, I had a VA quarter missing quite a lot of its legends due to grease filled dies. A very dramatic example of such. Think I got $20-something off eBay for it. ($28?) I guess I can't really count that since it was my buddy who found it and sold it to me, though.

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

I find a lot of errors and varieties. Most of the varieties are fairly common so I save them only in higher grades.
