Question regarding this '82 Ryan

Hi all:

I am preparing my first submission to PSA and had a question. Please look at the back of this card:

There is a line that appears to be a pen mark - but it is definitely not. I thought I may have a 10 before I saw that.

So my question is: Would this have otherwise been a 10? I would feel a lot better if it wouldn't have been a 10 in any case!

I am using this first submission as a dry run - not bringing out my A-Game items. Thanks!

Not at all a ten. More like an 8.
  • Nice Nolan card! The centering is great! The corners looks 8-9ish to me. Maybe its just the scan? Also that mark is small ink from the printing process. I have seen PSA 10s and lower grades with that ink on the back. If the scan is making the corners looks softish and they are super crisp even under 10X then you have a good shot at a PSA 10.

Wow. Thanks! I don't think the scan does the corners justice. They look pretty sharp.

look closely at the bottom area of the color and notice the colors and resolution and rather poor at the bottom of the hockey sticks and the team name/Ryan's name.

unless this apparent flaw is scanner induced, you may be looking at no better than a 7.

you could purchase a PSA 9 inexpensively. save your money unless you want the card holdered for the enjoyment of doing it on your own. nothing wrong with that either.
  • The scan makes it tough to get the real feel for the grade. It's probably safe to say it's an 8 if the corners are mostly sharp. 82's are famous for having that chipping affect around the edges. The bottom of the card is what I mostly see. The 82's also have plenty of marks on the backs of them from printing. At $5 a pop, it's not going to kill you to sub that card.

I am still learning at grading and am far from an expert. When I first started I would make my own list of what I thought the cards would grade at. Then I would compare once they came back.

For a 10 in that card those corners must be sharp, they do look like they may have slight tip bumps to them.

Either way have fun, hope you get some great results. You should post some more scans of other cards you are considering grading.

The other thing is what you are wanting to gain by getting them graded. Are they for you PC or to sell and make money?

Hmm I think I may pull Ryan out of my rotation. Great centering though.

Thanks Miconlegacy. Maybe I will post some of the other I am thinking of subbing. I am afraid the scans may yield similar results though.

It's funny. I want get 10s so I can sell them and make a lot of money. But if I get 10s, I don't think I'll want to sell them ever!

  • I think a 6/7 as well.. Chipping on the left will hurt and the color change on the bottom.

Agreed, bottom two corners are not sharp by any means.

Those bottom corners do look bad in the scan. They are not that bad in real-life!!
