  • I dont have any problem with this at all. Its obviously designed to reduce those sellers/buyers who try to circumvent ebay fees by conducting outside transactions. Communication is more than ample via ebay's messaging function.

For those of you who will cry that ebay and paypal are evil....just remember that nobody is forcing you to sell your stuff there. If you would like the freedom to sell your stuff and set your own rules, then open your own website and have a blast.

If you continue to use ebay to sell your items, then you will follow their rules. If you cry about the changes of those rules from time to time, then you should simply find another avenue to sell. It really is that easy.

I personally do not agree with a lot of what ebay has done in the past 3-5 years. However.....rather than pout like a 6 year old child, im smart enough to realize that for my situation.....its still far and away the BEST place for me to dump the occassional item.

Either stop pouting, or stop using the service. But to pout, then continue to sell there makes you appear to be just a little more than childish. image

You are exactly correct. And when they finally decide to take action....and close this glaring loophole....the forum members here somehow feel ebay is "screwing the seller". image

Gecko must be holding massive shares of Ebay stock image
  • I still think it sucks that ebay & paypal take a percentage of the shipping fee, for the novice buyer it looks like the seller is making money off the shipping fee charged when in reality the seller is breaking even or losing, yea yea I know just figure my shipping fee in with my starting bid easier said than done on certain items even when using the buy it now option.

as far as removing email address from your listing, no big deal, as after the 1st sale you have the buyers email address if you want to circumvent ebay. ooh well enough rambling time to go list some more junk on ebay. jmho

I hold exactly 0 shares of Ebay stock. Yet, I wont begrudge a company for running themselves as they see fit. If that means running themselves into the ground....thats fine also. image

At least they increased the size of the auction titles up from 55 characters (plus spaces). That's useful.

    .

    It gets worse........

While I have never moved a buyer off of EBAY while a listing was active,
I have routinely done the folowing:

    1. Moved as many post-sale buyers off of EBAY as humanly possible.

    2. Accepted countless offers on expired-listing items, and completed
    the transaction off of EBAY.

On Monday of this week, I found that ALL offers coming in on expired
listings were stripped of ALL item identifying info.

    The messages might read:

"I see this item did not sell, will you accept an offer of $60 delivered?"

ANY reference to the item - number/description - was no where in the
    message.

This was true of messages asking me to contact them thru the message
system AND messges that listed an outside email contact addy.

The irony of the censoring was that I sold items to every person that
gave an email addy AND did not even bother responding to the ones
that asked to be contacted thru the message system. I usually offer
to relist items especially for the paranoid bargain humters - if we can
agree on a price - but no more. Good job EBAY!

If this happens to you, and there is an email addy in the message, just
contact the offerer and tell him that EBAY censored his message and
that you don't know what item he is refering to; he will respond.

    ///////////////////////////////////

As for complaining about the EVIL empire while still using their services,
I have an absolute right to do the former and an unqualified privilege to
do the latter; the right stands forever, the privilege until it is revoked by
    the listing venue.

    Could this be a work-around:

    xxxx(at)xxxx(dot)com

or would Ebay catch that, too?

    //////////////////

There have been claims that it works, and claims that it gets busted.

I get lots of them written that way, but that does not mean EBAY
cannot stop them when they choose to.

    ..............

Photobucket pics can also be marked with an addy. They would
not be detected, but if somebody narcs them to EBAY the listing
    will be poofed.

A white box with white letters saved as a jpeg in photobucket
and located in the listing would be undetectable by both EBAY
and the unknowing buyer. If buyers knew that they should
    "select all" to see the info, you would have a fair workaround;
but, educatiing enough buyers to the trick would be a tuff task.

I noticed that too. Kind of funny since it really doesn't stop the sale from going forward if the buyer and seller are inclined to move forward.

Also, they've been pulling email addresses from ebay messages for over a month now. It's not 100% but their censors do catch a lot. I've been fine using 'xxxx at yahoo' and haven't had one censored yet.

I just bent over, got paddled by ebay and I said, "Thank you Sir, may I have another."

No, I'm not going to stop selling on ebay, however I do intend to explore those other selling websites that Storm has been posting.

Sellers are actually now worse off with those extra characters. With the added characters in the total box, even LESS shows up in the title when a page of items is searched for and displayed. In an auction I had listed before, the entire title could be read on this page. After adding a team name to what I had before in the title, only a portion of it shows up, followed by a bunch of.......... So, now my previous listing title which ended with PSA 10, now ends with PSA 1........

Exactly. The extra characters in the title fields blow.
Now you're seeing full team names and all kinds of info
you don't care about, instead of seeing the card grade.

The problem is that if you incorporate Ebay's "take" of the shipping fee into your shipping charges, the buyer will ding you with less than 5 stars. This has happened to me and I lost my best seller rating and 20% discount. The reason they did this is because sellers were selling I-phones for 0.01 and charging $499 for shipping. What is galling is that the seller can't even defend himself by proving his shipping charges were dead on.
Finally, if I can work a deal as buyer or seller outside of Ebay then I'm doing it. Why shouldn't we use Ebay to create contact lists? 90% of us have probably bought and sold from each other anyway. Just consider Ebay a glorified classified ad!

Imagine going to a card show where the dealers didn't have to pay for tables, but the promoter got a percentage of every individual sale.

Oh, and the promoter didn't charge an entrance fee and invited every cheap a$$ deadbeat he could find, making it harder for dealers to filter out bottom feeders who want free stuff from real buyers who are ready to spend.

How do you think that would go?
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
My guess is that you wouldn't like it, unless of course you were the promoter.

    Good for you.

I agree that Ebay is expensive, but I look at the alternative. I have been able to sell cards/memorabilia that I would never have been able to.

Maybe compare it to auction houses? What do they offer that ebay doesnt.
No hassel I guess but more fees. So ebay seems to be the best bet for simple items.
  • gemintgemint Posts: 6,126 ✭✭✭✭✭
With eBay/PP fees approaching 15% now I'm moving as many cards as humanly possible outside feebay. I'm using BST boards and am also looking at Sterling to list some cards. I figure if I'm going to use an auction house to move cards, I might as well use one that actually promotes my items rather than buries them in thousands of overpriced BIN auctions. I'm getting virtually nothing for their commission aside from the honor of being able to list my item with them. They don't even seem to want sportscard auction business anymore anyway. They'd rather cater to the sellers who want to move hundreds of commodity products.

They offer targeted promotion. Either full color catalogs with your item featured which goes to targeted deep pocket collectors or a link to the set registry to notify registry participants of cards coming up for auction. Ebay does nothing other than general advertising to a broad base of potential buyers.
