I'm thinking AT as well. MS70ish colors, just not as intense as most coin doctors make them tone. It has that "painted on" quality, and the crescent shape just isn't quite right either.

The seller's repertoire of current auctions seems to include a lot of toned Morgans, most of which don't look so good.

This is a good answer and most likely dead on accurate

Agree with the answers so far. Can you return it?

Looking at the seller's other auctions, it seems quite remarkable to me that he has many other Morgans with almost identical toning.
Coincidence? Perhaps but I think AT all the way.

As well as being a date which is not known for providing many nice toners.

If I had to choose between AT and NT, I'd go AT.

The color doesn't bother me as much as those luster "shadows" around the eagle, wreath, and reverse lettering....usually a sign of the exposed fields having once been played with.
I'd vote for cleaned. The NT/AT issue is of lesser importance after that.

Coin has been processed. One thing about AT coins is that surfaces have to be fairly clean before toning can be done. So in most cases the coin is stripped before it goes through the AT process. So when in doubt about toning, also look for signs of cleaning.

He does have a three day return policy.... money back but you have to pay the shipping cost to return, plus looks like he will withhold his shipping cost. I would hold up payment and ask that he void the sale... he does have 100% feedback so I would expect he would be willing to work something out.

FWIW... I also think it is AT; the reverse especially looks messed with to me.

The halo under the eagle's wings, around the arrowheads, and by the cut end of the olive branch make the reverse look as though it had been polished.

I think it is an AT coin. Did you look at the rest of his tones Morgans and
see that they all had very similar colors?

I'm not sure about the toning, but at a fairly low price ($85), you don't have much downside risk. If I were you, I'd consider keeping the coin (since you initially liked it enough to pull the trigger). If it turns out to be AT, you can add it to your reference collection, which would be valuable for future coin evaluations. If we were talking "big bucks," it would be a different story.

I would call it AT, as it has the look of the toning "floating" on the coin.

AT. The reverse and obverse almost never match in a NT coin at least among the countless Morgan's one sees. The fact the seller has a lot of other coins that look the same is a big red flag as well.

Eh I dont think I would have bought it, but I like white Morgans anyways. The toning does look very thin and too abrupt of color changes. Looked any what else was listed from this seller and this caught my eye.....

Update: The seller graciously and quickly reversed the transaction with a nice letter. I would recommend this seller to the forum members...the mistake was mine.

    Thanks! Doug

That coin is a AU train wreck, worth about 1/3 of what you paid, return it.

Haha...no, I just meant if he has OTHER material that you feel comfortable buying, he did the upright thing with me, even though I had already bought his auction. Other material could be slabbed items, circulated-can't-go-wrong items, etc. Doug

Anybody who wants to dip their toes in the toned coin segment needs to learn how to distinguish between natural toning and artificial toning before they start spending big money on purchases. If they can't tell between what's obviously fake and what's legitimate they're better off throwing stacks of their money into a furnace.

I wouldn't know. It sorta looked OK to me. image

Maybe that's why I'm not a collector of toned Morgans, and why AT/NT discrimination has never been my strong suit.

Edit to add: what's a "snad"?
