Although I am not a dealer, I feel compelled to answer here. First of all, someone who does that is an intelligent shopper. Second, the dealer should be offering his best price or indicate a willingness to negotiate. Would you walk into a car dealership and buy the car at sticker price?? As ridiculous as that sounds, so too would it be when applied to any purchase. Shop the market. Competition levels the field. Cheers, RickO

  • Standard? The original post makes it sound like this should be looked down upon?

Not a coin dealer myself though.

When I was working, we didn't mind if buyers did that, but we had one guy that would come in every day and ask the price, pick up a page from a buying pad, write it down and NEVER, EVER buy anything. He finally stopped coming in when I told him I was going to charge him for the stationery!

I ask the price and if I like it, I buy it. Sometimes I will ask for a modest price break if paying cash. That's it.

Dealing with tire kickers comes with the job.

Definitely. And it's not just true of B&M dealers. And other times it's more than just tire kicking. I've recently had a 70+ email exchange with a potential client, and at the last minute he bailed on a fairly large sale. He asked me every question under the sun about my items/some general business questions and I patiently answered them. We set a price and a time to meet, then he cancelled right afterwards. Haven't heard from him since (he'd been emailing me 2-3 times a day previously).

I can definitely see why some dealers get so irate at dilly-dallying customers.

  • one way to slow down the time wastes is for dealer to charge a appraisal fee for the non sellers

There are time-wasters on both sides of the counter. At a recent coin show, I went back to one table 3 or 4 times to get an audience, and when I was granted one, this particular dealer decided that he wanted to make money on both sides of my proposed trade, platinum and cash, for platinum.

I'm all for staying in business and I'm all for making a profit, but this one was a real time-waster and the deal would've been a pretty sub-par exchange - for me at least.

As said already, it definitely comes with the territory. But there are also buyers who never ask for a price break, they just buy or not based on your quoted price. They are few but they are out there.
