PCI MS68 (Red Label) > PCGS MS69 > PCGS > ? Guess the Grade (with a twist and a poll)

braddickbraddick Posts: 23,130 ✭✭✭✭✭
A wildly toned 1998 American silver eagle was cracked out of a PCGS MS69 holder and subsequently sent back into PCGS for another look.

Can you guess what PCGS did? I just received the coin back today and will show it after a few guesses.
Here's the crack out:
image

PCGS did one of the following:

Simply graded back as an MS69.
Placed it into a GENUINE holder.
Graded it at a lesser grade than MS69 and awarded the + grade.
Graded it MS70.

The "twist" is certainly not a barn burner, but it's better that a poke in the eye.

The favorite grade PCGS uses for wildly toned ASEs is MS68. I will say PCGS graded it MS68.

Interesting upgrade from MS to Proof.

It's also interesting they would no grade this but SecurePlus some other coins.

Seems AT. I've toned several myself legitimately and never seen that pattern.

LOL...too many late nights I guess. I was staring too hard at the the pictures side by side and it looked like there were two $ signs instead of an S$1. Only wish I could go to bed before 0830.

Ever since I first saw the coin, I've been waiting for it to be out of a holder with a grade. The colors are awesome in terms of shade and intensity, but in now way are they natural. I couldn't believe the coin ever graded.

    Even PCI red-labeled this coin.

I am astonished that it ever made it into a PCGS problem-free slab at all.

My guess is PCGS did the wrong thing first and the right thing next. But that's just a guess and for me, it's confusing, at best.

I sure don't get it?? You have a highly questionable (in my opinion) colored coin that's already in a pretty much maxed out top tier holder and which would likely bring a silly price on Ebay , and you crack it out for "fun"?

Thread Title: PCI MS68 (Red Label) > PCGS MS69 > PCGS > ? Guess the Grade (with a twist and a poll)

    Did I miss the poll?

    --------------

I think PCGS breathed a sigh of relief when you sent that coin into them raw.

I would guess that -- if they thought about it at all -- it was a source of some embarrassment for them.

I think Don Willis should buy you a steak dinner!

I only vaguely remember the threads on that coin from years ago, but didn't that coin sell for thousand(s) of dollars at one point?

Also -- the Proof designation is merely a clerical error, IMO.

Yes and he said many moons ago that he had been offered a large sum for the coin and passed......me thinks it came down to Pat having a strong suspicion based on the previous PCI holder and overal looks that the coin wasn't legit so he did the right thing and had PCGS take another look and they decided it didn't pass the mustard the 2nd time through..... image

From what I remember Pat actually lost a bet and "had" to crack the coin.
